P with J neck, J with P neck, anybody?

Of course Fender doesn't make it any less confusing with the Jazz Bass Special model, which is a P body, P/J pickups, and a Jazz neck. It's a Precision Special in every other variation except this one. Is it a Jazz bass? Fender wrote that on the headstock. But it's not a Jazz body by any means.

Jazz neck and Jazz bridge pickup + Precision body and Precision neck pickup make it at least equal parts J & P.

To be more confusing, the passive Precision Special of a few years back has the same basic set-up.

FWIW, I also have a Warmoth with J neck, J pickups, and P body. It sounds and plays like a Jazz to me, except it has a smaller, lighter body. (think G&L JB-2, etc.)

I think of the Fender Hoppus bass (P neck, P pickup, and J body) more as a Precision than a Jazz, despite the name.

Maybe we should call the hybrids with P and J pickups PJ if they have P body, and JP if they have a J body...

I also remember the Fender JP-90 bass that had J neck and body with PJ pickups.

Depending on what model you want, this is true. Used to be you could order a Precision w/ an "A" neck - same width as a Jazz. Not anymore. I wrote to Fender and asked about the availability of an American Standard P-bass with a 1 and 1/2 inch nut and was told I'd have to order from the custom shop. They quoted me a price of $6000
So I built my own. If I'd known somebody who wanted a Jazz bass with a Precision neck I could have worked out a deal, I guess.

The original neck on my P bass was shot, so I put an Allparts J neck on it.

Edit: Paul, upon closer look: is that a high-mass aftermarket replica bridge? The pickup choice with the pull pot is totaly awesome.

If your're still following: I tried to put an L series Pbass neck on a very early JV jazz reissue and it didn't come close to being a fit. As I remember the screw holes lined up but there was about a 1/4 " gap between the butt end of the neck and the jazz bass body. I think something was different on the early JV reissue jazz neck pocket dimension. Mabye no-one else has tried swapping early JV bass necks?

I love a Jazz body with P-neck.
Played a 1963 Jazz Body, with a 1962 P-neck for 10 years.
It was one of my all time favorites.
Was stolen form a hotel, 1997.

I have owned a Precision with an A neck since 1969. It was my only bass for 26 years, but since branching out and playing dozens of different basses in the last 20 years I've found that the size of the neck doesn't bother me.

I only have 3 preferences: 5 strings, 18 or 19 mm at the bridge and P pickups on P bodies and J pickups on J bodies. I don't like the look of P pickups on J bodies. . . . that's just wrong!

Other than my fretless, I've been playing P necks since about 1983. That's when I put this together.
