PA intercom horn

I found a PA intercom horn in the trash. Kind've like the one in the attached photo. I hooked it up to a 180watt Ashdown. The sound was disgusting. It cackled and cracked, with major unwanted distortion, but I loved it. It quit working though. The coil inside the speaker got to hot and lost continuity. I want that sound back so I'm looking for a new Horn speaker to ruin. I'm assuming the speaker was about 8 or 12 watts or so. What wattage of speaker would be best to achieve the ultra distorted tone I want and while keeping the speaker from breaking?

You blew it by not filtering out the lows, those things need to be passed somewhere in the middle/upper frequencies. It's basically a bullhorn, which is made to amplify one thing, the voice, which doesn't have very low, or high frequencies.

Also, how did you hook it up. Those things have a small internal amplifier operated by a battery. You may have been running your amp output into another amp. If you did have it rigged to the speaker part only, your LF killed it at a minimum. Likely was overpowered with the whole broadband signal as well.

OK, I see now it's not a bullhorn. LF and too much power in general killed it.
