PA speakers as studio monitors.

I did a little searching and found nothing. I was wondering if using PA speakers would be a good idea for a home studio. I'm not talking about huge dual 15 inch cabs, but something in the 8 to 10 inch range. I am interested because I would like something I could also use as a practice PA.

I used to have a pair of Rogue PA cabs (10") and I used them with my Line 6 toneport with just bass. I just think that for the price of studio monitors vs stage cabs, the studio monitors seem a little small and weak. It seems that I might as well just buy computer speakers. I know that the home audio speakers are made to make the music sound better, that is why I am considering PA cabs.
 
For my money, the value in near field monitors isn't nearly so much how loud they get as how flat and detailed they are. While the sort of small, low-cost club cabs you're talking about might beat some near-fields in how much power they can take, neither "flat" nor "detailed" tends to be chief among their virtues.

This. Though if you're not planning on doing any mixing ever, then you could use PA speakers.

Computer speakers are awful, I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
 
Studio speakers are near field speakers, like computer speakers. They are meant to be close to you. PA speakers are meant to project.

There is a reason that computer speakers are cheap. They tend to be anything but linear in their response. If you need to do mixing, get yourself some proper studio speakers.

If by studio you mean "where I practice", then by all means just use PA speakers.

My computer speakers are all banged up from me touching them with bargepoles :)

A cheap PA is always handy, but not very good for mixing.

My favorite is to mix with headphones and earbuds. Then try it on the home stereo and in the car.
 
ditto all of the above. Studio monitors are fairly weak compared to PA speakers, but they are designed for studios, home music rooms etc. PA speakers are designed to fill venues, when do you need that sort of volume at home? :)

PA speakers sacrifice balanced, quick and accurate frequency response for sturdiness and volume. Basically they sacrifice everything you need for mixing/recording in exchange for something you DON'T need for mixing!

You CAN mix on PA's, and some big engineers OCCASIONALLY do (along with reference monitors etc) but you need to REALLY know what you are doing and why.

You can also get BIG farfield monitors that have most of the balance of monitors and most of the volume of PA's. These things are serious, they need to be mounted in the wall and cost a lot. The farfields at my studio cost £15'000 and almost never get used, that was a big fat waste of money! They are good for impressing bands with lots of volume, but as soon as the band get out of the room we switch straight back to the little ns-10's :)
 
what about using top of the line PA speakers? does that change anything?

Sort of, but not really, the factors remain the same. PA speakers, even really nice ones are not designed for ruler flat frequency response etc etc they are for power, projection, making music sound 'better' as well. PA speakers need to make things sound GOOD and LOUD, monitors need to make things sound true (ie if it sounds bad, the monitors will tell you, great PA speakers are like hi fi speakers in that respect, they'll gloss over the bad bits to a certain extent.)

Hence the large farfield monitor thing, they kind of ARE PA speakers designed for monitoring, but they are huge and very expensive.

Another consideration is that you may find you have to crank your speakers to get them working in a good range where they sound as they should, for some PA speakers this could be dangerously loud in a small room!

As usual though, its music, and creative, I'm sure theres a fair few great mixes out there done on PA speakers, both good and crappy ones!
 
The majority of PA speakers these days (good or bad), are compact two-way boxes, crossing a 12" or a 15" woofer off to a large horn. Inherent in the design, is a boost in the midbass, a fairly big scoop in the midrange, and a lack of detail at the very high end.

They are perfect for punching a band's music out into a noisy, less-than-perfect acoustic environment. They move a lot of air, they can shake a room thanks to all that midbass, and they are very crisp and intelligible in the upper mids.

But they are anything but balanced. Listen to your mix on them, and you'll miss all sorts of potential problems.

Even worse, if you EQ your mix to suit them, it will sound weird on playback through conventional systems.
 
Even some pretty astounding and expensive PA boxes aren't going to meet one of the primary qualifications of a near-field monitor: SMALL FOOTPRINT.

But actually some of the comments about frequency response aren't totally on the mark because some of the better mains boxes seem to do about as well as the Yamaha NS-10 and variants, which is favored because it was once favored way back when and not because it is near-flat. It was portable, cheap, and available and caught on because having a common REFERENCE wherever one went to mix was worth more than having something that was superior.

But whatever you use, it's about being able to consistently have mixes translate well in a variety of environments, not to have big surprises about stuff when it gets played in homes, cars, etc.

Good point, but the ns10 is kinda the inverse of a PA, it magnify's the important and tricky area of the midrange, which the average PA sucks out a lot of. Also NS10's start to break up when you get to the limit of bass you'd want in a commercial mix, its a good indicator of 'right, thats bassy, but not too crazy'. whereas the PA would probably have bass spare even on a pretty subby mix!

NS10's are also well liked because the group-delay in the low end is remarkably low. I'd imagine the average PA's group-delay across most frequencies doesn't match up to those of most monitors. Between these things they are very good at sorting out problem mixes, not just because they are a 'known constant' in studios around the world, though thats a big factor too of course!

That's a totally useless generalization. Well, maybe it applies to crap cheap PA. But not well-chosen mid-tier boxes, and not the big boy toys. Say stuff like that and anybody who knows PA is going to have trouble taking anything else you say all that seriously, even if you might know something about other types of gear.

There were a fair number of nearfields back then that were more accurate with good detailed midrange imaging that didn't force foam or tissue paper retrofitting. But they didn't meet the price point and they weren't distributed enough to become ubiquitous.

As for latency: ohmigod. I guess we've gone as far as we can with this little chat.

It was an over generalised statement, I admit, but it does seem to be a feature of most of the pa systems I have used.

I think in the context of this thread we can ignore big BIG venue/'big boy' systems! It was a rather playful suggestion, NS10's boost a lot of the nasty frequencies, PA's are likely to have a little less of them (if anything).

Yeah, they are largely crap, but they DO have the benefits I suggested! My boss (who is VERY experienced) was the one who told me the NS10 low end limit trick. I know that when the kick is on the edge of breaking up on the ns10's then I've reached a nice limit for it to go , low end wise. Of course you'd generally do this on the bigger monitors and just listen, but in a tricky track with an abnormal low end it can be a good 'meter'.

Ditto the mids, I'm happy (as are a lot of the engineers I work with) they are pretty awful in the top and bottom because it is , as I say, an audio magnifying glass on the region where all hell can break loose. They just make a couple of things easy to sort. And monitors are an area where personal preference is so crucial, Bob Clearmountain is a legend of course but him saying they are crap is not going to make me want to use something else. They happen to be one of the nasty sounding speakers that seem to have stood the test of time. I cringe a little when yamaha release new revisions which are 'like the ns-10 but with more lows!!' etc etc,it seems someone has missed a trick there. I'm not alone as an engineer who like to work on a very imperfect speaker design. In mine and a lot of others opinions its not a case of 'I just about know them well enough to do something which doesn't suck' and more 'they make certain parts of the whole process really easy' sometimes on there own but more favourably in conjunction with a nice pair of mains. I generally prefer one pair like NS-10's or AR-18's and one slightly low/hi hyped pair like KRK V8's or adam A7's.

..ok, my bad, by latency I mean the group-delay of the speaker, and the time domain characteristics which are very good in the NS-10's low and mid range. Have you looked at a Freq./Amplitude/Time waterfall plot of the NS10's? They are pretty good results! One factor that makes the bass sound small on NS10's but pretty accurate for a cheap speaker. I'm not certain, but I would imagine the size alone would impact on this particuar area of performance in a pa speaker or even a bigger monitor speaker.

Sorry latency is the wrong word, lazy english, though it kind of works as long as you differentiate from digital system signal latency (which I didn't :) )
 
I got spanked for placing essentially the same thread as this one on this forum. I have to agree with Greenboy, etc. that using typical PA speakers for studio monitors is dangerously wishful thinking. So, that means I have an excuse to get .... MORE GEAR!

They simply can't be made to do double-duty. So, the search is on....

I might end up with a pair of Fostex PMO.4n powered monitors. The reviews are very positive and Fostex is known for making custom drivers for other manufacturers. If anyone has experience with these speakers, let me know.

I was curious as to whether pa speakers could be used as strictly home audio speakers period. Not for mixing, or any studio work. Just as a set of amplified home speakers to run into my boombox. I do it with computer speakers. I do it with near sound monitors. So if I run pa speakers into my boombox will it sound as good as either of th eother types? I see many have very high amp. ratings so I wonder if this might blow out a small music system? I also wonder about how people are saying these pa amplified speakers tend to accentuate bass. Is this the case on all? I am specifically looking for a natural sound (similar to monitors) but with less bass and an accentuation of highs. I usually do that with eq's on my speakers, etc. But i do not want anything that is going to be bass heavy even after I turn bass down to nothing with an eq. I want a pretty flat sound with very high frequencies high in the mix. Call it tinny. Call it trebly. Call it harsh. Call it bright. That is what I like, I am an audiophile. I don't want anything else. So will pa amplified speakers give me the sound I desire? Which brand/model will do so and also have the eq on it. And will they put out a better sound (to my needs) than an amplified 'studio monitor' that I am already used to having. I have behringer, numark, and alesis monitors at home btw. And my price range will not exceed $300 for a pair of speakers. I want 2 obviously, not this single speaker crap I see.

Here's the point I have found. You can't get good monitoring with PA speakers, they are playing the SPL game and not the fidelity game. Studio monitors are not going to give you the sound pressure level, but will greatly surpass in quality, cause that's their game. Speaker sensitivity is part of it, PAs are made to use less wattage for the same power.
