packing cabs for shipping?

whats the best way to pack a small cab (1x12)? I take it just putting it in a box with popcorn probably isnt the best idea...thanks

Given it's small size, I would surround it in at least a 2" layer of 1" bubble wrap, taped to ensure it does not unwrap and put it in a sturdy box so it does not rattle around. Extra corrugated corners would be a good idea, also.

NO, wrap the cab in plastic wrap to seal it from moisture and to keep the box and othe materials from scuffing the cab.

Then suround the cab on all 6 sides with 1" pink foam insulation from the home store. The box should be a tight fit around the cab & foam.

These materials will support the cab and it will get to the destination without being destroyed. In no means use peanuts for anything except eating. I have shipped products around the world.

Pretty much "ditto" from me on this. I often wrap four sides in cardboard--mainly to help protect the grill (especially if clothe) and the back (if open-backed guitar cab). foam sheets are very inexpensive and can often be found at rental centers or home improvement stores for free--you just have to ask.

The better you pack it, the better the odds are for less damage.

Also, I only ship on Mondays or Tuesdays, preferably Mondays.

I went to church with a guy that worked in the UPS distribution center in Omaha. He told me most damage happens over the weekend as one package might get moved numerous times throughout the weekend before ever getting on the route truck. The chance of something getting damaged goes up each time its moved. So, I ship only on Mondays to ensure item is delivered no later than Friday.

I only use FedEX now too.

what i did when i shipped a couple cabs recently was first wrapped the cab in bubble wrap, then boxed that up, then i put it in another box and surrounded it with more packing material, another good idea is to re-enforce any weaker areas (say the tops and bottoms that are held together with tape) with some extra cardboard.

I used to double box. Now I break up the second box and stuff it around the cab, similar to what Bob described with pink foam, for a nice, snug fit.
