Padauk as a top?

Hi there.
I am ordering hollowbody fretless bass (something like Rob Allen's basses) and there is option of PADAUK as a resonant top. Does anyone have experiences with this wood? Thanks alot for your suggestions.

You may want to take into consideration that over time, exposed to the sun's UV rays (if you have it near a window, outside playing a lot, etc), that padauk will lose its bright orangeyness and weather to a browner hue. Not necessarily a bad transformation, but just something to consider. I don't know if this happens to padauk with a clearcoat on top, as I understand it, it happens to oiled-finish instruments though.

I really loved the rich red hue... kinda reminded me of Donna Pinciatti from That 70's Show... so I had to choose it for the top and back of this bass:

They are English Spalted Beechwood.

i bought a bunch of beautiful Padauk years ago for a project bass i was gonna build.

gorgeous stuff. be careful when cutting, sanding, etc...wear a mask.

one of these days i'll use it.

My number one fretless is a Hanewinckel Nimbus Pro 6 with a padauk top and mahogany body. It sounds warm, rich and rather complex, tonally. As has been pointed out, it changed to a nice dark brown from its initial orange after about a year.

Chiming in on the Skjold Design basses. VERY NICE! I had a 6 made, but it's simply too much for my left hand. Now I'm having a Skjold 5 made!
