Does the zero fret affect tone or playability much? I've never played on one myself.

which affects playability, of course.
my first zero fret, and it was surprising, how fast the first setup went..

it's 55 mms wide, actually I find it a bit too wide after my 44mm 5 string nut. if I'll ever build a 6 string again, I would go with something smaller at the nut, and wider (19mm) at the bridge.
