Page vs. Slash vs. Van Halen

Ever see Frusciante live? He makes the funniest faces during his solos...

He's either reveling in the music on a level that is truly devine...

...Or he's having a particularly nasty bowel movement for the whole stadium to see... :hiding:

EVH was another guitar player who revolutionized the actual playing of guitar with his "pyro"techiniques (sic). Definitely the best player. Good band.

Pagey was a tone master. Great writer and great arranger. Sloppy technique, but I could always tell the gist of what he was trying to do. GREAT band!

Slash. OK. Wrote a couple of good signature riffs. Nice tone, but not in my top 20 by any stretch. Lame band.

Hendrix, Zappa, Beck, Sancious, Rundgren are players I prefer.

Page, he made sloppy solos into works of art. All the differant sounds he could create on the simple guitar amazes me. See Led Zeppelin made music not songs.

EVH well in my opinion just plays long solos not really a versitile person.

Slash, I liked how he played and how he fit the songs well, but i do no like his tone.

All IMO of course.

I have to question this, what band are you listening to? 90% of VH tunes are under 4 minute pop songs with short/one pass solos, plus he gets more different tones out of one guitar than a wall of synths.

I'm not saying he is the leader here (see my other post), but what on earth are you talking about?

That's like saying: "Jimmy Page is just too tight and meticulous a player for me."

4 minutes? Really? They fealt like 10 minutes long i didn't know when the song ended and when the next one started.

I'm just saying I prefer Page to EVH and i do not like EVH, maybe Led Zeppelin has given me too much to expect from "the guitarist who revolutionized the playing of the guitar."

I highly respect Jimmy Page as one of the driving forces of one of the most (if not THE most) influential bands of all time. He is one of my favorites and without Hendrix's caliber as a player, I think he's a true pioneer and innovator, BUT...

To me, Eddie Van Halen is the perfect mix of virtuosity and soul (Read: Amusing and enjoyable music made by a flashy player). To say that I admire him as a guitarist is an understatement (I'd like to feel the same way about him as a human being). He's a true genius with an unmistakable personality as a player (BTW, he's not only a superb lead guitarist but a fabulous rhythm guitarist as well), terrific tone and, again, he's IMO the only one who could combine jaw-dropping chops with great music (I don't hate Hendrix's music, but doesn't do so much for me either), contrary to most shredders that only can fire super fast scales and arpeggios without saying anything.

Slash is nothing else than a competent player in my book. Now, if you put Frank Zappa to play this game instead of Mr. Hudson, it would become really tough.

Hey, Eddie was a Pentatonic/Dorian Wanker. Most good rock guys are wankers of some sort. No problem with that.

Page was part of Zepplin. Take away Zepplin, there's not much to be said for Page. Same goes for Slash.

Eddie attracted players because he was Eddie. Van Halen just became the vehicle. He redefined rock guitar, and laid the ground work for everything that happened in rock guitar in the 80's. Eddie did it, not a band, not song writing. His guitar playing, especially his solo's. I saw an interview with Paul Schaffer once, and they asked him who is one of the most talented players to have ever sat in with the CBS Orchestra. He quickly said Eddie Van Halen, and there have been tons of people who've sat in with them. He made comments about Eddie's musicality and ear.

Guitarist's spent the better part of two decades trying to sound like Eddie. It goes beyond just learning some finger tapping and such. His playing on guitar is as elusive as that of Jamerson on bass. You can get down some riffs, but you still can't pull off his feel. He was a phenom.

+1

I agree with your post, all very true. Eddie was the first guitar hero of the 80's I suppose. I don't think even he knew how good he was back in his day!

I am shocked and saddened buckethead is not in this discussion

Buckethead seriously owns. He owns copious amounts of arse.

Buckethead.

Listen to the guitar hero II version of "jordan". The solo is intense.

Also listen to nottingham lace or 'embalming plaza' both GREAT songs.

Flakeh Im gonna say it.........Buckethead is good but not Iconic a lot of people haven't even heard of him, doesn't make him bad just not iconic.

He hasn't hit "revolutionary" or "legend" status yet.

As far as the comparison between jimmy page eddie van halen and slash goes its hard to say who is the best. Jimmy Page however has probably made a bigger impact on rock music than slash or Eddie van Halen. Jimmy page almost single handely invented the sound of rock music as we know it. His style and unique sound has been the inspiration to guitar players such as Slash and Eddie van halen. In an interview Eddie said he got the idea for his "tapping" techinque from Pages solo to "Heartbreaker." So without Jimmy page there very well might not be an Eddie Van Halen or slash as we know them.
But Eddie and Slash have greatly contributed to the evolution of the rock n roll sound. So there is no real way to officialy compaire the 3 as far as SKILL i guess it comes down to your opionion of them and their music.:bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

There's no doubt there's a continuim of influence in any style of music, but Page didn't reinvent anything, not did he necessarily inspire masses of wannabe players. The cool thing Page did, or their producer, was get all kinds of different vibes on all those songs. That was amazing. I still say it was Eddie who spawned millions of little Eddie's around the world. Who do we still see on the cover of magazines all these years later, even though he's a drunken mess?
