Painting a headstock

spray until you can't see the edges
then spray at least that many more coatsof clear before finish sanding
last thing you want to do is sane through your decal
it is suggested to let the decal dry 24 hours before spraying clear
i use water based poly so only waiting an hour or so

Bad lighting but here you go! Will take more in better light tomorrow
It’s not perfect but better than I expected! Should have used gloss instead of semi gloss but I can live with it! Not a perfect build but again I’m happy and can say I did it myself!
Does anyone know the effects of spraying gloss over semi gloss? I am happy with my outcome but would prefer a glossier finish. I am not willing to strip the headstock but if this is an easy solution l’ll give it a go. Thanks in advance
If it's the same manufacturer and they are compatible, you can just spray gloss right over semi-gloss. You can also usually buff up semi-gloss and get a gloss finish as well.

i try to get way more coats of clear than i think I'll ever need, then finish sand (wet) 500 600 800 1200 2000 #0000 steel wool. then buff by hand (got a little mitten in the car care section) ribbing compound, polishing compound, swirl remover. then hit with meguirs wax for that showroom shine
I just swapped out the neck on my Musicmaster because 1)I loved the thin profile and 2)loved the maple fretboard.
Now I'm thinking about painting the headstock so there was alot of good info here. Thanks for the inadvertent assist.

Can I ask one question on this zombie thread, did you have any build up issues with the clear coat when you tried to put the tuners back in?
Hi there, first of all thank you!! I did not have any build up issues. I filled the tuner holes with tape to avoid any build up. The process was frustrating and harder than I would have thought but it was a fun experience. Good luck and be sure to post photos!
