welcome, pagan!:)

about the stand up factor, i typically sit on my mesa combo amp and play. the cabinet is the perfect height. when playing while standing, i lean the bass against my left thigh and block it a little with my right foot. the bass stays right where i want it. it also helps that i never got used to anything else first!;)

Hello all; it's been a while since I've done anything with bridges for the Palatino, but yesterday I bought a few pieces of wood to see how they sound. The one I'm really curious about soundwise is lignum vitae (gah, my sandpaper!). More on this later. :)

Has anyone come up with a better endpin clamp? I've been trying to find a piece of drum rack hardware I can use to replace those two massive, overbuilt clamps that must have come off some sort of machine tool fixture. I think I'm going to try to clone the brilliantly simple Azola Bugbass clamp out of a piece of 1" square tubing.

I've never had any problems with my endpin clamps (well, they were rattling once, but I unscrewed them and tightened the inside screws to fix it) otherwise I'd probably be trying to fix that too. About my bridges, I made one out of lignum vitae and it's pretty dense. The sound is pretty good; it just sounds "big" overall (not necessarily very double bass-like, just big).

My reason is that having two clamps makes adjustment that much more fussy, and they're massive- they must add at least a couple of pounds each to the bass! I've ordered some 1.25" square aluminum tubing with 0.125" walls. Azola uses a threaded 1/4"-20 brass screw with a large plastic knob- the screw bears directly on the peg. I'll post photos when I get it all machined.

I made my bridge out of maple- nothing unusual there. I may make an adjustable one as well.

I put Daddario Hybrid Medium tension on this bass...too stiff.

For my next order, are the Hybrid Lights significantly less stiff, or should I go with Thomastik Superflexible Solo Gauges on them ( a friend recommended those).

I'm looking for the easiest strings to pluck and finger on the board, because I do a lot of quick fingerboard work.

My Palatino came in yesterday and I am really impressed. The finish and sound are really great! My only issue is that
the A string slot on the nut is just a bit too low. I read somewhere that it is possible to put a drop of glue in the groove and then file it back to a slightly higher level. Has anyone done this and if so, what type of glue should I use? Thank you! David.

I have been following this thread, and have been thinking about ordering for months. Yesterday at a rehearsal, a sax player who owns one was kind enough to bring the VE-500 to rehearsal. I took to this bass like a fish to water. Really was impressed for the price. Very, very comfortable to play. I was expecting a period of adjustment, but I went right into walking and soloing with no problem. The sound was better than I thought. The fingerboard was very comfortable, and very similar in feel to my regular upright. I turned the knob to cut off the bass level, and ran it flat through the GK head. He has done nothing to this bass regarding taking off the stock strings or adding tubing, so looking forward to making those changes, if necessary.

I played it through my Wizzy 10 and a GK MB150 head. Comfortable standing up. A little difficult sitting on a stool, but I need to work with this. He has just the endpin, no stand. Now, have to wait, but found a website to order from that had one available without backorder so I am guessing it will arrive in a week or so.

I am looking forwad to using this for rehearsals and going out to jam sessions, not having to load and unload the regular upright. It think it will be great for gig situations where there is just not that much room too. Already have a situation in mind. Compared an electric bass sound to my upright, this is way closer in sound to an upright. Looking forward to bowing it too.

Just a quick HELLO to all the Palatino users & abusers. Mine is still going strong. Bought new D'addario hybrid strings asap after I got it. Put a bridge (made from Plexiglass) from Yvarg-Thanx Mate!!! Then changed the tail piece for a cello one-it broke(while in it's case) so I loooked at DB ones & eventually made one myself outta brushcutter cord!!!!!!!! The thickest I could find!!! It took a few days for it to stay in tune for more than 30 mins!! Then a few weeks for more than a cuppla hrs!! But -even tho I was waiting for it to SNAP ---it's been on for almost a year IIRC & stays in tune for plenty of time now!! I just tune up B4 each gig.
I gig with the EUB about 2 x per week & it sounds great. I still wanna take out the stock pre amp(my elec knowledge SUX!!!!!!!!) as I know run it thru a Fishman Platinum + which works well, & the stock is just redundant. Must do it!!
Just thought I'd say how the Palatino's still doing GREAT!!

I gigged the palantino on saturday for the first time and was very impressed with the sound I was getting. However I seemed to be getting a very low resonance feedback at times within the bass itself. I thought at first it may be coming back through the stage into the endpin and back into the bass but lifting it off the floor made no difference.

I ended up cutting the lower frequencies on my amp graphic at around 40 - 80 Hz and this kept it under control but it did take away some of the ooomph that I like so it would be good to get rid of this another way if possible.

Has anybody else here come across this ?

Hey guys,

The old " Franketino " is in great working order. I have two pickups on it for now but gnerally just use the Rev Solo. I'm on my second set of Euro's and the sound is great. The case is holding up pretty well also. I ended up buying a regular upright last week and although I love them, I don't miss hauling them around. Just getting the regular upright home was a pain.

Let's keep playing along.

Did you dampen the metal tailpiece? Could it be that your tailpiece is ringing? :eyebrow:

I did read about this in the early posts in this thread but for some reason thought that this ringing was of a higher frequency.

The ringing I'm getting is a very low frequency around 40 - 80Hz I think.

I'll have a re-read of the posts relating to this and give the fixes a try.

It could very well be the lowing ringing; before I switched to the double bass tail gut thing the metal tailpiece would often make it so that if you plucked a note and then muted the strings you would still hear that note quietly resonating still. Good luck with the sound issues! And Rod, I'm glad to hear that bridge is still working for you. :)

I've been looking at sellers of Palantino EUBs and would like to ask if there are any preferred vendor/sellers out there. On Ebay there are several Palatino EUBs being sold by "OnLineGuitars.com". I would prefer a vendor/seller who cares about basses and what goes out the door. Used is cool too.

Any advice and opinions about where to buy one will be greatly appreciated.
