Pants..

This is a little bit OT, but is there a big difference between Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian?

I assume they all dislike pants just as much everyone else though.

Swedish and Norwegian are pretty closely related. Finnish is to Swedish almost as English is to Chinese.

I actually don't dislike pants. I would dislike skirts much more.

We in the USA have a word for it too....playoffs

:D

I do hate skirts, especially when they are those more formal type skirts and cover even the girls' knees! But you are forgetting the place where all the big contracts and final decisions are made mano a mano - sauna. It is impolite even to bring a towel, let alone a pair of pants. Swimming trunks, absolutely not!

Yep, at least in Finnish. :smug: There's no Swedish word for it AFAIK. (I speak Swedish as my native language so I should know if there is one). Perhaps Rune or some other true Swede could help here: have you ever heard the word "Kalsongfylla" being used in Swedish?
Nope. Never heard the term "Kalsongfylla", but it's definitely a very illustrative word that fills a hole in Swedish, and I hereby pronounce it a part of my vocabulary.
In terms of association I'd say "Nätbrynjefylla" (mesh top bender?) is more in keeping with typical Swedish dress code for the same activity, but it feels more sordid and destitute... You word rings more of an active decision!

I hate pants. They're so restrictive and uncomfortable to me. I hate them all! :spit:
I wear shorts almost everyday. I have a job that allows this thankfully. Even when it's super cold out (the way it has been in the past few weeks in DC) I've worn shorts. My girlfriend thinks I'm insane. My co-workers think I"m insane. And yes, I do get cold. But I just really, really dislike pants of any sort. I suppose if I worked outdoors, it would be different. If I were forced to be out in the cold all day I imagine I would wear pants. But it would have to get really cold before the trousers would make an appearance. And jeans...don't even get me started on those things. I would honestly prefer a punch to the face over wearing jeans. Denim is a terrible, bastard of a fabric.

There are huge differences.

Swedes pwn everybody. Icelanders and Finns pwn Swedes,
except when Nowegians are around. The Norwegians pwn the
Swedes. The Danes pwn everybody. Except the Faroese who
are pwned by the Finns and Icelanders. Greenlandic
natives pwn no one unless they are Lapps or Inuits.

The Finns and Icelanders like each other a lot, even though
they have to both talk in Danish to understand one another;
since no self respecting Finn or Icelander would use Swedish
for this purpose. As the Vodka bottle approaches empty,
the overabundance of aa's and kk's in Finnish becomes more
pronounced but radically less important and when they start
singing, they all sing in each their own language
understanding each other perfectly fine, except the Swede
who doesn't understand any of them, and can't be bothered
to try, since the Swede's pwn everyone. As the Swede well
knows.

I hope that clarifies the issue for you.

Yep, that sums it up pretty well. :D

I think it might have been around 1946 last time it happened
and it was the Faroese they pwned. Or I might have got a
detail wrong there somewhere, Suomi guy. But you get
the general idea. Pass the beer, it's pilsner time here.

Hmm, after reading the Wiki article on Denmark's history, I think last time the Danes pwned anyone was the formation of the Kalmar Union in 1397, with a Danish queen leading the Scandinavian states - Denmark gained the control of the Faroe Islands from Norway during the Union. After that it's been kind of downhill for Denmark, except for some southern province that the Imperial Germany returned to them at the Treaty of Versailles.
