I'm going with the pick guys on this one. At the beginning of the solo part, if that's not pick noise flea was playing pretty "sloppily," and I don't tink thats the problem.

It's easy enough to record your solo separate and use fingers on that part. It is Studio.
I have his video where he is interviewed by River Phoenix (God help us), and he demonstrates using a pick (with all downstrokes).
