Passive Jazz Pickups + Preamp= Stingray Tone?

I also have played a Stingray at Guitar Center quite a few times and I'm in love. Too bad that it probably costs more than my car is worth. Even a Sterling is out of my price range now.

I have a project Jazz Bass that I'm working on trying to figure out what to do with. My idea is to try to create a Leatherman Bass, an all in one, super versatile bass. I already have some SD Quarter Pound pickups that I haven't decided if I should keep. I didn't really care for them, I found them a little too dark sounding. I'm wondering how close I could get to a Stingray sound using passive pickups and an active preamp.

I plan on wiring this with a series/parallel switch and a bypass on the preamp so I can switch between my "Stingray" tone and the normal tone of a Jazz Bass. What value pots should I use for a setup like this? I found that the quarter pound pickups were too dark with 250k pots, so maybe I should try some 500k pots before I go shelling out for a preamp. I'm actually not sure how the pots work in an active setup, are they attached to the preamp? Is the wiring setup I'm describing practical, or even feasible?

Think I can cop the tone of a Stingray this way? I also thought about routing out the body and throwing Stingray electronics in there, but then I wouldn't have my Leatherman bass.

jazz pickups will sound like a jazz, not a stingray, no matter how you preamp or EQ it.

the QPs will indeed sound brighter and clearer with 500k pots. use linear tapers for the volumes and audio taper for the tones, and you may not need a preamp.

If I throw a Music Man pickup in between the two jazz pickups, what value pots do I need?

Also, is the string spacing at the bridge going to work? I'm not sure if the spacing is the same on a Stingray.

I need to try out an active jazz bass. That would be much simpler to install than Jazz pickups and a Stingray pickup. Maybe I'll like it.
