Not generally but if your power amp smokes you're in the same basic boat ... In my years of using JBL EON Series 1's and now QSC K10's and KSubs, I have never had a failure of any sort... The only powered spearker issues I have ever heard of related to Mackie SM-450's being run on their sides as monitors, on hot summer days. Apparently they will shut down as a result of over heating. Once they cooled off, they could be turned back on.
My experience with powered speaks is that they fail on the bath tub curve. Pretty much they are good to go for an indefinate period after a burn in period. I've never actually experienced a failure during burn in either but if failure were to occur, that's when it would be is my feeling.
The stuff has gotten awfully darned good by now. Those EV Live X are pretty nice. I prefer the QSC stuuf but EV , JBL and Yamaha all have nice offerrings. QSC has given me great advice and service over the yeats though, it's hard to discount that for me.
