saw them twice at their peak. one of the greatest players. the riff beginning at 0:41 was loud and clean as hell - and hair raising. what a group that was. one for the ages. here ya' go:

I talked to Paul personally.
It was a Telebass with Hi A's and dead Rotosound Swing 66's
The bass has 5 outputs. 1 per string and and overall. Headhunters was recorded in Japan. The bass track alone, was a combination of 5 channels.
So I guess the secret to getting one of the best P bass sounds ever is to not use a P bass.

I bought this years ago as an Import...just recently, it was re-issued (with a different cover) domestically.
I have seen it at Amazon, Dusty Groove, etc.
Reviving this old thread which I'm glad I came across since I've been listening to so much of his stuff lately tho everyone seems to talk about Paul Jackson's time with Herbie Hancock and Headhunters but he played on some other great albums.
Eddie Henderson - Heritage has some great funky bass playing alongside some great 70's tone. I'm curious how he gets this sort of funky fretlessy vibe to his playing. And is it a P-Bass? Sounds like a mix of PBass at times and in some tracks a Jazz bass! Crazy!! What a bassist.

I read on another site that these pickups were recommended for vintage voiced p, i.e., less hot.
Anybody have experience with these for that mid-'70s Paul Jackson p bass with flats on a maple board tone? (Skill and funk-in-the-fingers not included, of course.)

Paul Jackson was all about rounds, never flats.
He mentions that in the video he made with Mike Clark

Rounds make sense, there is a lot of clank and brightness to his tone.

I still vividly recall hearing Thrust when I was about 19 or 20 years old. I was completely knocked out cold. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How can a “human” possibly play such an intense groove that’s all improvised.
Almost quit bass on the spot.
Maybe I should have in hindsight.

Nice I gotta check it out again. Yeah, his bass if choice definitely changed after the '70s, I think. I love that p bass tone, so maybe going to rounds would help and some EQing/preamp.
Love Thrust, tho Flood is my Paul Jackson of choice lately. That album is filthy the whole way through.

We live in a cell dead zone area, so driving to/from gigs I've gone back to listening to.....cd's! So great, and Flood has been spinning most often. Rounds? Wow, didn't expect that, a bit of an old school sound, but I guess fingers, dead rounds, tone knob....
