Paul Jacksons bass guitars and gear

Anybody know the basses and gear PJ used and years they might have been made. I heard in an interview by Mike Clark that he never played the electric, only the upright, but one day asked to play with Mike on electric and thats where it started.

Probably my 2nd fav bassist of all time, love his tone, simplicity, especially with the Headhunters before and with Herbie. Also recently found out that him and Mike Clark were very very close friends, and even lived with each other awhile, along with playing with him a lot obviously. What a legendary combo.

Paul pre-dated Clark in the Headhunters and he was already playing electric then, plus in the band Azteca that pre-dates the Headhunters he was playing electric so I don't know about the upright only thing. Tele bass in Headhunters.

Think he used a P bass in the classic Headhunters period.

He used a tele bass with Hi-A (old Bartolinis) pickups on the Headhunters album. I always thought it sounded like it was strung with flats but apparently it was wearing Rotos (or other rounds).

Did he really have that bass in '73 already? Most pics from that time show him with the P-bass.
In '76 he was using it live with Hancock (not saying he couldn't have use it earlier):

It also seems it has the normal output only at that time.

Every video I have ever seen of Paul Jackson during the his Herbie Hancock days shows him with a pretty standard looking Precision.

I did little search, Headhunters was recorded in September, 1973. It was released October the same year. The video you shared was in 1976. I think Paul Jackson used a standard P-bass for the album and got his heavily modded bass later.

The Headhunters Album sleeve photo isn’t of a Telecaster Bass.

Regardless of what instrument that stretch of recordings is quite fantastic

I have a Herbie Hancock book arriving soon that should have some charts from that era

Artists may not always be accurate. I remember Louis Johnson saying he always used a Stingray when he used a P-bass on Quincy Jones’ Mellow Madness, with Herbie Hancock on the Manchild cut, The Traitor, and in the first Brothers Johnson album, Look Out for Number #1. Johnson then used an Alembic Strawberry Letter 23. It was after all of that, he started using a Stingray.

First electric was a Harmony Bass

Fender Telecaster with Hi-A during Hancock years. Apparently the modification was made by an unnamed Chinese Violin Maker

Used 4 Polytone Amps with it!!! 1 Amp for each string!!

I could swear that the picture on the back cover of Herbie Hancock's Thrust album showed Paul Jackson holding a sunburst Fender Precision Bass!

I thought this thread was easy as Jackson has Telecaster on Headhunters sleeve

But no, it’s a Precision.

When I saw him he played jazz bass which is bass he played on Chameleon
