Paul Simonon :The Clash

I always said the punk movement blew up because everyone and their brother tried to be like the Clash and none succeeded.

No need for the music history lesson - I know how it happened. But yeah, no matter what I am doing or listening to, mention of Paul and the Clash trigger a Pavlovian response, and I just have to drop what I'm doing and pop on London Calling.

Paul couldn't play when he joined the band - he only played bass so Mick didn't have to. The music on their first album as raw at best. But so what - that's what punk is all about. And by the end they turned into the most musically talented band punk has ever seen. IMHO, of course.

Yep, he was completely green when he started, but he picked it up fast. He was able to keep up with the rest of the band through the stylistic changes. And in the case of the Clash--one of my favorite bands ever--that's saying a hell of a lot. I still need to get a white P with a black pickguard...
