It's amazing what he did - from what i read he basically started playing bass when he joined The Clash.
When the Clash first started out they were all very rough players. As they progressed in their careers, they started to become better players and doing more complex rhythms and were more polished. That bass player did some very cool riffs.
well, part of the genius of it is that while you're putting together your cheats, you'll learn a thing or three and not need the cheats.
plus, i'm sure it looked cool on stage!
I've always dug the Clash, but just started learning some of their stuff on bass. My son and I have been playing Jimmy Jazz and it has a great walking bassline w/ forays into reggae. Pretty cool stuff.
Yeah, I love the bassline for the Magnificent Seven because instead of being reggae like their previous stuff it's more disco than anything else.
love Simonin's playing and the Clash in general.
you should check out his bass work with The Good, The Bad and the Queen - a band he played with a few years ago with Damon Albarn from Blur. i prefer it to Blur! great dubby bass:

Well if he played in "The only band that matters" wouldn't that make him the only bass player that matters? 
I love the basslines in the Clash, and the Clash's music in general, but I heard somewhere that Mick Jones was responsible for the basslines, at least on the first album, and that Simonon was there originally so that they wouldn't be the ugliest band in history. At any rate, the basslines to Magnificent Seven, Guns of Brixton, The Call Up and Bank Robber and many more are great.

I've been playing some of his basslines for years. Dig his stuff. London Calling, Train In Vain, Bankrobber are a few of my favorites.
