I have seen McCartney live 3 times since the mid 70's. I only basses he played on tour was the Hofner and the Ric.

I thought the exact same thing when I first tried one, but after trying a second one that was properly set-up and being played through a nice rig, I have to say they aren`t half bad!
The weight is a nice change too when coming from Warwicks and MM StingRays :p

Yeah, I'm a pretty big guy though (6' 4"), and it felt like the tip of one finger could cover 3 strings :D. I also felt like if I dropped it, it would shatter into a million pieces lol.

I often think of how the Beatles might have been different had Paul played a Precision (which I believe was what he wanted, but it was too expensive). So much of the appeal of the early Beatles was the look, and the Hofner was so integral to that look.

Paul also made the Hofner an icon. The P was already an icon.

My guess is that the music would have carried them to where they are now regardless of whether Paul played a Hofner or a Precision. The "look" was them and their clothing and haircuts, not so much their instruments IMO, as the teenage girls screaming at Shea didn't know or care what he was playing.

    Absolutely on both points.

    Yessss!!!!

I have been looking for a copy of this picture for years. I have the right hand version of this bass. The luthier had enough wood after he chose stock blanks to make a right handed version. Here is a link to a picture.

What's that between his feet? Did Paul spill his drink?
