Yeah, your luthier must have skipped class the day they went over Fender's entire history and committed it to memory.

Not everyone likes Fenders and is as versed as you on their history, even luthiers. I'm sure Mr. Sadowsky would agree.

Does MusicGoRound or buying used gear from GC count?

If so, two years ago I scored my 1996 Warwick Corvette with all wenge neck for $450 at MusicGoRound. The electrics were non-functional, so I put some Barts in it.

Three days ago I purchased a used Mesa Basis M2000 from GC in South Carolina for $600 shipped. Fully functional, footswitch, power cord, and it lived in a basement studio all it's life. Can't wait for that to get here.

Pawn shops in the Detroit area have a lot of instruments and the prices they ask for are ridiculous but they are hurting. No one wants to go and get ripped off anymore. Most people have wised up and go straight to CL and Ebay but so have the shady pawn shop owners. Got to be careful when buying online these days, especially CL, where any idiot or psycho can post whatever they want. At least ebay and TB have feedback systems, which aren't foolproof, but can give you an idea of what to expect.

Craigs list is a place now days.

I got a Peavey Studio Pro 112 amp for $25.

I am thinking about looking at a no-name bass
with 3 strings for $60.

It looks like good stuff in the pics.

Odds are it is fire wood.

There were some good pawn shops in L.A. with tons of gear. I would attribute it to the waves of 80's glam & 90's alternative. A lot of people came here hoping to make it big & ended up becoming librarians or something.
If you look on LA's Craiglist you'll still see a lot of instruments. Check Nashville--I thought I'd see a lot, but not really. Interesting, geeky research.

Wow, I've never found deals like this in SD, MN, or IA. Some similar on Craigslist, but never pawn shops. Not a lot of pawn shops around here though...

The bass that was with me the longest I found at a pawn shop in Tulsa around 1983-84. Tokai P-bass copy in impeccable shape.

Landed it for $70. It paid for itself the first night at the first gig I played it at. I played over a hundred gigs with that thing, probably 200. It was a tank. Never even had to tune it. Never let me down.

I owned it until 1999 when I became a father and sold pretty much all my gear. It's one of the instruments I most miss and most regret parting with. Not only a great bass, but so much sentimental value to me.

I got a Westone Rail bass for $100.00 once. Such a cool bass. then it got stolen.

Guild Jet Star-2 for $250- no picture but in dead mint condition. Sadly I let it go but it's in good hands.

EBMM Sterling for $500.00

MIM strat with am standard hardware and electronics for $160 with hard shell case

I picked this one up 20 years ago... Floral strat for $120

EB-0 bass. currently sees a lot of use. paid $160 about 10 years ago. It was all original when purchased.

I've gotten better deals but they weren't from pawn shops...one being this 70 SG for 50 bucks.
