update: I just adjusted the bridge saddles down: WAY down. And no buzz! 
This bass plays perfectly with wicked low action. And 'sustain for days'... I had to check the amp to see if the compressor was on (it was off!) - this bass has more sustain than my lightwave. 
This unexpected 'sleeper' bass is about to kick a few of my other basses TO THE CURB. It just now unseated my '94 Mexi-Urge as the most comfortable Fender bass that I own... (no small feat, it's a nice one!)
I was in NYC a couple weeks ago, trying out Sadowsky basses (my Mom's maiden name is Sadowsky, and I have been seriously pondering buying one just to bring back to show to her!) - and this humble little Fender bass is impressing me the way that I had hoped the Sadowsky basses would. (I found them somewhat underwhelming, actually.)
The one complaint I have is that the Jazz bass pup is a SINGLE COIL. ( I despise single coils...)
Does anyone know if there's a more recent HUMBUCKING JB pup that has that same 'slanted Fender logo'? Or if these covers come off ( so I could put the cover on a humbucking jazz pup)??

I once had a P bass Lyte and had to sell it . Soon I'll be assembling and giving a new life to my hybrid P Bass Lyte from parts (1) Body: a real road worn beat up relic sunburst body (2) Original gold bridge , tuners & neck plate (3) adding a '02 Fender MIM Zone bass neck I just found here on the TB classifieds , Pickups ? Not sure yet I'm still reading all these forum suggestions

In in on this club! Had my '89 p-lyte since last summer and I feel like I was born with it. It was my third bass and I'll probably never part with it. I practice more than ever before.

Inspired on the amazing work some of you guys are doing with their P Lytes, i decided to upgrade mine. A bass that i am very fond of as it is my first bass. The mods are the following:
Pickups: Aguilar AG 4P/J-Hc (Already got em)
Hardware: All the way with Hipshot ( A Style Bass Bridge + Ultra lite tuners + O Ring knobs)
Pickguard: Quickguards
Now the things i'm not so sure of...

- The thing is i'm not sure if i should go in gold with the hardware, as i'm leaning more to the chrome look.
- Keep the Y Key shape of the tuners or go for Clovers
- And the big one. Should i keep the color or the bass or go for something new? As i kinda like the idea of keeping the original color for nostalgic reasons but i don't know if it's waaay to much with the current pickguard and i should go for a flat color.
- If i change color i was thinking of something like a "Midnight wine" or "Dark cherry" or something else...?
When I redid mine the finish was pretty beat up and I didn’t like that color but with that pick guard it looks pretty nice. I’m not a fan of gold hardware in almost any situation so I’d consider black.
I have quite a few dings on mine too, but have left it alone due to not wanting to have to deal with having to add a new water slide logo and covering up Serial #s on the headstock.
Later model P Lytes had chrome hardware, so I was lucky to find one parted out to get the direct replacement back neck plate and bridge. I’m not a fan of the gold and mine was pretty tarnished/faded.
I prefer the clover tuners. Classic look that works better with the Fender headstock. You can get hipshots that fit perfectly (including the screw hole) so no drilling or mods needed.
Noob question here... Did anyone had any problems replacing the tuners? Because there's this little bump in the holes that makes them more narrow at the back and the ultralites won't fit. I ordered 3/8's like everyone else but i'm wondering if they sent me 1/2's, or there's something really dumb that i'm missing or i'm going to have to drill the neck?

From what i get, It's that circular woody thing inside that makes the tuner hole smaller. (I assume that all the plytes have them) And according to them the US ultralites fit just fine but the licensed ones dont.
I guess that the only way to remove them is by drilling? Im going to take it to my local luthier to see what can be done.

those are called, Tuner Bushings- Some use tool sockets and a clamp to remove them by pushing them up and out from the back of the headstock - like in this picture

I had an extra issue with the fit of the pickguard with the knobs so i went chop chop style. But overall i'm really happy with the whole process and the outcome, even though it was a bumpy ride and there are still some details that are going to be a work in progress. Again thanks a lot!
