Peavey 2x8 at jam session

Largely retired these days but was also asked to come play at an open-mic restaurant/bar jam.

When I got there and walked up to the stage, I saw the 2x8 bass amp provided and was immediately disappointed due to having played through one a few years ago at another event. I mean, 2x guitars/keyboard/loud drums; asking a 200 watt 2X8 bass amp to keep up is a bit much. At that jam, I was not given the opportunity to adjust the amp.

I adjusted the amp to my bass and found there is a “sweet spot” just below where it begins distortion, by turning the bass EQ down..

I ended up as the only bass player there and played the entire 6-9 jam. And was impressed that I could keep up with all the other instrument/amps. Pretty darn good for only 200 watt 2X8.

That is impressive. I may revisit a 2x8" cab. Nice for the 'ol back.

I definitely appreciate more power for clean overhead, and larger drivers.

I understand. But for practice or rehearsals, 2x8" may be enough for me. I do play at loud levels at all.

IT surely does the trick at low levels. I still prefer a 12” driver with the same 200 watts.

Yea, I have two 12" cabs and one 12" combo amp.

So Anyway, I think we sometimes lose sight of the amp that's provided in a backline.
With a 2x8, the host is telling you to use your inside voice.

I've played a 200-seat theatre production with a PJB Cub amp... 100 watts in a 2x4 combo. No FOH support, and no complaints.

I’ve been hoping for one of those for a few years now. But there are other things I want more than a brand-new one. I know I could use one in midsize applications. Easy haul.

FWIW, the bassist I play with has been using my Dark Glass M200 thru a TCE 2x8".

He uses pedals and doesn't like the modern dirt sound of the M200- no prob, turn it down. That head also has excellent flexible EQ so can be set to sound more ... traditional.

We are only using 15-25 watt guitar amps (Bass Breaker, Night Train) but that bass rig sounds just as good as my PF50t into a 1x10" - just different. (These are my recording rigs.)

And we use it with a full kit, and also with Roland kit through a small PA.

2x8" at 200w. can actually be quite loud for rehearsal; haven't tried but I think it would be fine for a small tavern, etc.

Did I mention I bungee the head to the cab and can move the rig around the room with one hand ...

I played that exact cab with my Magellan 800 at a musical get together and was gobsmacked at the overall volume and tone that the little guy put out. Color me seriously impressed!

I have a Peavey 2x8 that lives at the rehearsal space. It hangs pretty well with the (loud) band in rehearsals, and I've taken it on gigs successfully as well. However, it stays at the rehearsal space now because I got a Rumble 800 -- a 2x10 big boy combo that's *lighter* than the Peavey. I have some amp casters from my old Acoustic B200 combo that died -- those might go on the little Peavey...

I have an RS28 as well, and I wholeheartedly agree.

I've played a couple other 2x8" cabs, too. I am more impressed by the Warwick 2x8" cab than the Trace Elliot Elf, but neither of those are as capable as the RevSound.

I've never even seen the Peavey in person, but I really like the design/form factor.

it's even 130W in 8 ohms, if you're talking about the elf head and one 2x8 cab.
it becomes 200W only with a second one.

We were even asked to turn down. I could JUST keep up with drums and guitar before 2x8 speakers were gonzo stressed. I didn't want to blow out the guys amp.

It was the combo.

I was asked to come back by the guy organizing because “I sounded better than the other bass players” (they have low standards? Haha) and invited to play at a b-day party - sheesh, and here I was “retired” from playing out. If I go back I will take a 112 cab and a 500 or 800 watt amp. I like headroom and note “heft”, even at lower SPL.
