PEAVEY FIREBASS 700

I dig it, crazy loud and a nice tone.

I need to get a cab (or two) for it. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a vintage 215 to come up local. But one of the new lightweight Tour 810 or 215 cabs would be cool too.

Right now I just have an old 4 ohm 115. It hits pretty hard through that and gets me by for now in my blues band. :)

Zombie thread. Sorry about that, but I need some advice on this specific amp.

There's Firebass 700 for sale in the local ads. The head's features indicates it generates "700W @ 2 ohms, 475W @ 4 ohms, 275W @ 8 ohms". The seller has a matching Peavey can who's impedance is 8 ohm. I never quite understood this impedance thing: am I to understand that I'll never get more than 275w from that head with that cab ?
I know this is way too old a thread for anyone to actually read this reply, but every time I see this question come up it pushes my button. Power is determined by what voltage and current an amplifier can provide into a specific load(impedance). More than anything else, the size of the transformer in the amplifier determines the maximum power capability. At lower impedances, that transformer has to provide a lot more current to maintain it's rated voltage. As long as the transformer is big enough, the amplifier power output will double at each step down from 8 ohms, to 4 ohms, to 2 ohms and so on. The 2 formulas usually used to specify power are voltage squared divided by the load impedance, or voltage times current into a specific load. These are normally written as E squared over R(load impedance) = Power in Watts- or E X I = Power in Watts for a specified load impedance. So, yes, 275 Watts into 8 ohms. Remember, the transformer output voltage is determined by the windings on the internal primary and secondary coils. The current the transformer supplies increases as the load impedance decreases but the voltage tries to stay the same until it can't keep up. That's why you get more power into lower impedance loads. You want loud? 4 x 8 ohm 15 inch speakers(2 ohm load) connected in parallel to the output of the Firebass 700.
