Peavey G Bass... anyone?

Recent listings seem to range $600 to $800 on these. I have a GV that I bought new. The 5 string ones were a little different than the 4 strings (2 pickups; different bridge, truss rod adjustment location), but a few things translate over.
- The stock tuners frequently fail on these as they age. Luckily Hipshot Ultralights fit and are a great replacement if you have a failure (replace full set; I went with black as it looks better on the black headstock).
- Neck has been incredibly stable on mine
- The neck tilt adjustment ferrule is frequently missing (they sometimes fall out with age)
The example you have here does not have the factory bridge (Gotoh one is decent though). Calling it out as the tuners may have also been replaced (which would solve that concern for you).

This has been one of those Peavey basses that I've been interested in. I can't really help you but I've got a fair number of Peavey basses, from foundations to B-quads, and I'm a firm believer that most Peavey basses are exceptional basses for the money. Looking at Reverb, the high price seemed to be $800. Since that bass isn't 100% original, I think you could talk the proice down to get a great bass
I had one almost identical to that one. Same color and everything. Really nice little bass. The CF neck was very comfy and the preamp is pretty good too. You can definitely get a Pbass vibe pretty easy based on the pickup placement.

I owned one for years. Really cool bass, lightweight and plenty of tones at hand. These are 35" scale, so be aware of that. I wish I had kept mine for BEAD tuning!
I had the single pickup Forum, which looks remarkably similar. appears to have the same pickup, same approximate placement, and body style, but a wood neck and pick guard..

Its got the Gotoh bridge and tuners. Tuners look to be a direct replacement. He said he thinks he still has the originals but didn't like the black knobs and headstock then chrome tuners and bridge.

Yeah the chrome tuners looked out of place. The GV did not have a chrome bridge to begin with, so they looked even worse there. The Gotohs will be a solid upgrade and Gotoh does make direct fit options. With those two changes, that bass has modifications, but it is better quality hardware than it came with. Not something that is going to add value, but I certainly would not expect to pay less with those changes (not like we are talking about a vintage Fender here where people care about original).
It took me a bit to bond with my GV when I first bought it. At the time I was mostly playing a G&L L2500. The GV was completely gutless by comparison. Eventually I figured out the strings I liked on the GV and began to appreciate it for what it is.
Never. The figuring it out phase happened back when I bought it... brand new in 2002. Been extremely happy with it since figuring out string choice and how to approach the pickups/preamp.
I would say just looking at it and considering the improvements that's a pretty nice bass for $800.
I paid around $350 for a green sparkle Peavey G bass in great condition with hardcase from a music store about 10 years ago. It was a nice bass but I eventually sold it. Prices have certainly gone up since then but I personally would not pay $800 for one. Maybe 5-$600.

Gotoh pretty much set the standard for mini tuners back in 1978, the knock offs Peavey used will follow that standard

I paid the same for my black sparkle, roughly about the same time period too.
Last summer one went in UK classifieds for £800, boy got zero interest so gradually brought it down to £650 or might be £600.

I had one in between a Modulus and a GGould. The Peavy was a fantastic player and value. I sold it to finance something or other and should have held on to it.
I had a green flake one that I always kept in BEAD, the 35" scale is perfect for that.
I purchased two G bass carbon fiber necks that were NOS from Peavey. I need to do something them.

I have two. I love ‘em. They are highly versatile instruments, relatively light, and well balanced. If it is super clean, $800 isn’t out of the question. Also, bear in mind that they were nearly $2K basses when they were new, and they didn’t catch on. I once saw one on my local CL for $400 and missed it by an hour. It’s a great, relatively unknown instrument. I also think they are really sharp looking.
