Peavey Mini Max Head Thread

I'm transitioning from a 6-year-old Ampeg PF-350. It has served me well, no problems, will now be a backup amp.

My initial impressions of the miniMAX....
- this amp has got some serious slam to it! Very impressive. Notes have a bigger dimension.
- the low end and low mids have great EQ control, great grunt.
- the tuner works well.
- easy to dial in the thick fat sound I like.
- Fan is surprisingly loud. I never heard the fan on my PF-350. I'll have to come up with a fan noise silencer.
- big 'feature' sticker on top of amp was a bugger to remove. I scratched up my brand new amp in the process.... grrrrr!
- Overall I am very happy with its build quality, power, and tone shaping controls. It makes my good sounding Cabs into amazing sounding cabs. I did not really expect going from 350 watts to 500 was going to produce such a dramatic difference, but Peavey did it right!

Kudos to BbbyBld !!!

I also had a PF350 for a while so I know the change you are speaking of. Congrats on the new amp!

the amps for the peavey max combos 110, 112 and 115 look like the minimax. the front panel feature set for the 112 and the 115 match the mini max. the specs for the max 115 looks like it might be the same power section as the mini max. noticeably different: the di-out is on the front of the combo amps, and there is no effects loop.

it made me think - in the case of the max 115 - that youre getting the minimax and a useful 115 speaker box for the same price as the minimax when you buy the combo.

? has anyone - perhaps a service person - had to pull the amp from the combos, and could they be converted to/used free-standing ?

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I am pretty sure that @BbbyBld posted that the Max combos were voiced the same.

I don't think it has a line out for an external speaker. All you have is a combo.

understand, but assuming there are wires leading to the combo's speaker: i could attach e.g. a neutrik connector to those wires, yes?

? wonder if the combo amp boxes have sides, and wonder how ac power gets in ?

ah, i ask because a nearby retailer has some of these where the cab or speaker grill has been damaged in shipping/handling. they are quoting heavy discounts - <$200. i was toying with the idea of scavenging the amp from one of these, as we did way back when with old , tortured bassics, tnt's, tko's or combo 300's.

a grounded a/c plug <$5 and neutrics are ~$6. would be trivial to build a wooden box to house the amp. the local retiree that builds birdhouses probably wouldn't charge me more than $10 for a box, maybe $15 if painted.

having read bobby baldwins posts these many years - and recalling him talk about redesigning the max - i could easily imagine that his minimax design was a modular backbone for a family of devices and perhaps different output sections are 'plugged in' to make the different combos..... the max115 looks like a mini max wedded to a speaker cab, less an effects loop.

hmm.

How did the audio pot mod go? Is it more gradual now?

this is the part. I've not ordered a replacement yet. I've found some things that look close, but I'd like to be sure before ordering. Unfortunately my local electronics shop closed...

anybody know what this is by looking at it?
thanks

Man I want one of these, I just spend so little time playing bass. And I know the fan would bother me at home where it would live most of time.
I hear ya.....but having returned the Eden E300 because its DUAL fans were too loud in my family room, be sure you listen to one before you get one
(that E300 was a great amp and fine in a loud jam situation)..I am putting up with my Orange TB500 fan noise but it does bug me

this part will do it. 10k audio/logarithmic taper. 25mm shaft. mini pot.
I have a similar part with shorter (20mm) shaft on hand to attempt my mod. I hope I don't screw up the circuit board. Wish me luck!

Hi all.
I'm waiting for my minimax, the delivery is shipping for tomorrow.
I have a question, which cab for minimax between Ampeg svt210av and Eden ex112 (or better Peavey Headliner112?) stand alone for rehearsal? As soon as possible, I want to buy a second cab to create a twins of pair.
Thanks in advance and sorry for mu poor english.

I use the Peavey 210 Headliner with mine and it keeps up with two half stacks and a loud drummer. (I need to add another cab and blow them away.) We are playing grunge, but what type of music are you playing?

Has anyone else had soundmen/women mention a buzz coming from their MiniMax?
I've had several places we play talk to me about a buzz coming from my DI on my MiniMax.
It's pretty frustrating. I've tried using the ground lift switch, but it doesn't seem to help.
I don't know if I have a defective amp, or if it's just bad power and I'm the only one who's equipment passes it through to the board or what.

I've thought about getting a Hum-X plug to see if that will help, but they aren't cheap.

I was just curious if anyone else has been experiencing this, or if it's just me.

I really am liking my MiniMax, and my bandmates are too. The fan seems to be an issue for some users, but I don't even think about it, whether practicing at home, or gigging. It doesn't even enter into my thoughts, and nobody in my band has said anything about it either. It definitely keeps the amp cool. After an entire night of playing, I can put it right into the pistol case I carry it in without worrying about the foam getting warm, because the amp is literally cool to the touch.
That's a fan doing it's job for sure!

Anyway, if you're also getting a buzz from your DI, I'd love to know it isn't just me.

I use a PVH210 (I think that’s what it’s called) and it has plenty of oomph. I don’t think it’s ever been past 5.

I have no complaints of hum or buzz from the DI. Are you using single coil pickups? That has definitely caused hum from room to room in my experience. Also grounding issues in the cavity of controls and pickup- shielding problems. Not amp issues.

Yup!!!! Me too! It seemed like at first that wasn’t much of an issue but about 6 months ago i started getting a bad hum from the DI. So bad that I started using a direct box velcroed to the top of my cab, right before the head when i don’t have my pedal board. When I got my pedals I use my Aguilar ToneHammer DI.

Seems most like to complain about the fan “noise” from the MM but a buzzy DI is a deal breaker for me. Love the head...light, loud, simple, rugged, cheap... so I use the other DI options I have. I do wish there was a “power amp in” connection... use the power amp section of the MM fed signal from my Epifani ul502’s preamp.

Hate that your having the same problem but I’m glad your having the same problem. Lol was wondering if it was just me!
