PEAVEY Minimega/MESA subway D800+

Andy, do MI manufacturers run into or enforce the same situation as many electronic products, whereby if a retail customer in France, for instance, buys an American version (or any similar situation where the so-called 'gray market' is cheaper to a given locale), the French licensed distributor won't touch it with a 10-foot pole, even if the buyer pays for repairs completely? We see this a lot in photo products, with wording as such included in the warranty handouts. I realize Mesa and others deal in a lot of countries with varying laws, but is this common?
Warranty law is complicated and varies significantly from country to country. I am not well versed in the details outside of US and Canada but I know there are things we can do here in the US that we can not do elsewhere, as well as things we must do elsewhere that we can not do here. Understanding and following local law is one of the responsibilities of the importer/distributor of record, the additional costs of doing so is born by the sales in that region.

Another reason for the separation of each region is that there are addditional regulatory costs associated with safety and EMC testing/certification that can vary greatly from market to market. For example, Australia has national differences that are covered under their c-tick regulations that require lab additional testing and paperwork. Then there's the owner's manual translations, the unique region required safety text, labeling changes, and in country physical inspections. Generally, each region's costs include this additional (costly) work that must be covered under a relatively small number of units. I'm not even addressing the additional taxes & fees that many countries expose on imports.

It's not fair to ask an importer/distributor to cover these costs, or to compete against those who don't have these costs when making a sale is it?

I have somewhat simplified this, but the point is that there's an awful lot that goes on that none of us are aware of, and it's both time consuming and expensive.
