These basses are incredible bargains when they are still in good shape. A couple of things to check before you buy:
1) Look for a crack in the pickguard by the jack. This seems to happen often on Patriots that where used alot.
2) Check the frets. Some people played this basses so much that the frets are almost worn away. Of course this is really a testament to how great these basses are.

I am not sure how heavy the mahogany ones like this weigh. The standard painted ones have maple bodies (like the one in my avatar) and tend to weigh over 10 pounds. Some of the custom versions are very light. I have one that only weighs about 7 pounds.

I ran across this thread doing some Googling. I bought my Peavey Patriot from a friend in the late 80s and it's a 1985 model that looks exactly like the '87 you posted. I've played a lot of basses and my other primary instrument is a 1991 Fender P-Bass Lyte, but I always "come home" to my Patriot because it gets a woody plunk that's straight out of the late 60s and early 70s. When you drive it, depending on how you flavor your amp settings, it sounds very close to Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones, and Geezer Butler. I also love how it honks when you roll the tone knob all the way down. I bought it for $75 and I will never part with it. Cheers, mate!

I just bought a mahogany body Patriot for 99 bucks. These are great bass made to go head to head with Fender back in the day. I sold these to a lot of kids just getting started and I always felt good about it, great bass at a great price. You done good, enjoy that bass!
