Peavey Zodiac BXP vs Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass

its getting closer and closer to my birthday and i was looking at these 2 basses , could anyone give me more insight on these instruments ???

Well the peavey would give you more sonic options since it's a pj. Also I like alder over the agathis of the vm p... Unless you get the maple one - I really like those. I also think the peavey is kinda ugly but that's probably just the fender guy in me coming through. P purists would say that a pj doesn't have the same sound even with the p soloed... And there is some truth to that. That's all the theory of it.

I say look on eBay for a used MIA Peavey Fury from the 90's. Might run you $200 at most. Nothing at all wrong with BXP's but the construction of American made basses is usually better. As for the Squier... well... TB's army of Squier Boosters will be along in just a minute to give you their unabashed enthusiasm.

MIA Peavey Fury > Squier VM > Peavey BXP

I've owned both P's and PJ's and I think the PJ bashing is overboard and unnecessary. For a long time, a PJ was my only instrument and it suited me just fine... I got usable P tone from the middle pickup and usable J tone from the bridge.

I would say go with the older peavey fury the neck is amazing if you like slimmer j necks. think geddy lee sig slim. I own the vm p bass and it was great stock but I love it now after being modified. J bass neck nordstrand np4 tort pickguard and new pots and a jack.

Yeah, I totally agree. This is another good reason to get a Fury from eBay. There was another thread where the kid was asking about what he should pick for his first P after having used and loved a J for a long time and I thought that a Fury would be absolutely ideal for him. I don't think he noticed my recommendation because the chorus of CV recommendations drowned me out. Anyway, I happen to like a nice warm, strong P sound but I like the J neck so it's really a perfect bass if you're anything like me.

If you get the Fury with the split pole pup,
you'll probably want to upgrade that.

I love my Fury. Great neck. Well made.

I got a maple body VM P bass with flats on
it. I love that bass also.

You can do well with either of those.

The Zodiac looks impressive, I just don't
have any experience with one,

Gotta bump the Fury. I had La Bella flats on, and was considering a pup swap to some P-46s, till out of no where, the flats broke in and the voice of the bass came alive.

Am gigging it now. Note that you might wanna replace the output jack as these basses aren't all that new any longer (mine started cutting in and out at a gig ).

The standard Peavey Zodiac BXP and the Squier VM Pbass are totally ok basses for the money. Both are well built, and sound decent. Personally I'd take the Peavey over the Squier due to the extra range that the J-pickup adds.


However.... The Peavey Zodiac DE Scorpio bass is on another level entirely. This bass, which can be had used for less than $200, is absolutely astonishing. It's built as well as any US-made bass in the $1,500 range. It sounds and plays amazing. It is, hands down, the best bargain extant in that price range.
