Peavey Zodiac EX p bass copy

I'm pretty sure you mean Zodiac BXP, not EXP.

Anyway, they are very nice, well made, solid basses. P/J setup, VVT controls, and a sweet playing neck with a 1.5" nut. Nice heavy duty bridge with grooved baseplate. IIRC, they had alder bodies but don't quote me on that.

IMO, they're not really a P copy since they have the bridge pickup, but that just gives you a little extra tonal versatility. The ones that I've played sounded very good - full and round and pretty gutsy.

They've been discontinued but IIRC, they retailed for about $400 new. Finding a good working example for $100 would be a steal (especially if it had a maple board, but that's just my personal preference).

If you go to Youtube and search "Peavy Zodiac bass", you'll find a bunch of clips.

No, there is a Peavey Zodiac EX. It's a single P-pickup, as opposed to the Zodiac BXP, which has a P-J configuration.

Well, color me uneducated. This is the first time I've seen one. Did Peavey sell them in their starter packs? I don't remember seeing them in any recent Peavey catalog, but...I'm getting old.

I still stand by my good feelings about the BXP, but I'm not sure if the same could be said for the EXP. My bad.

No, OP really does mean Zodiac EX.

I own a BXP and the more I play it, the more I love it. :D I was most impressed with the neck. Really low action even on the higher frets and easy to reach the first fret. It is the same as the EX's, at least in width. I don't know how they compare tonally, but the solo'd p sounds solid and punchy.

Yes, the EX model was sold in those $179 starter packs that included a bass, amp, tuner, strap, gig bag, cable and an instructional dvd. I'm laughing when I think about this - seriously, for $179?? I have some very strong reservations about the quality of the Zodiac EX.
