Double Bass Pedal board preamp sounds like Acoustic Image?

I love my AI Clarus4. I can get the sound I want just plugging into this amp.
I know AI has Flex pre but I prefer the preamp can be put on the floor. It would be better if it can be run by 9V AC

I have tried EBS Stanley Clarke Acoustic preamp. It is very useful but didn’t like the sound that much.

I could not handle Grace Felix.

I have heard someone using RHI Basswitch with his EUB and I really liked it. However it is discontinued.

Please share your experience!

I have an AI amp that i love myself. Can’t five any recommendations though, but it might be useful to others to hear if you use one or two channels.
What about the HPF and notch filter, do you use those?
Are you running a pickup or mic?

Notch filter is not mandatory. It’s nice to have HPF and2 ch with phantom power but it is ok if it doesn’t have these features as long as I can get sounds like AI. I probably bring my AI when I really need it. But I’m too lazy to bring AI for all my gigs.

I look to use it with my Double bass and EUB.

I’m just curious what you didn’t like about the Grace. Was it the price? or perhaps all the little push button routing switches? The Headway EDB-2 H.E. isn’t a pedal but it easily mounts on a mic stand. Just my take. There was the Empress Para Acoustic DI Pedal that was discontinued as well.

It’s more like I could not handle Felix rather than I didn’t like it. I could not figure out how to get the sound I want out of Felix. Larry Granedier, John Patitucci and Matt Brewer use Felix and I love how they sound.

I think it would be helpful to know the specific features you need. If two channels is not one of your requirements, you could put the Tech 21 Q/Strip and MXR M81 on the list of possibilities.

Input Impedance:
Q/Strip = 4.7Meg
M81 = 2.2Meg


I second the Empress ParaEQ Deluxe a well. The deluxe version has continuously variable Q/bandwidth filters, so it would work better for notching out problems. Input impedance is 1Meg. The deluxe version also has a variable frequency HPF and LPF.

It’s gonna be great if I could have HPF and Phase reverse but what I like about AI is the idea of “plug and play”. There are EQs but they really don’t do that much. In another word, I don’t like the preamps have a lot of features like mid-Q.

I found M81,Q/strip and empress ParaEq available at local music store. I will definitely check them out.
