Pedal interconnect patch panel

Has anyone ever put together a patch panel for rapid connection of pedals?

When I'm messing around with effects by myself, sometimes I'l want to insert a pedal between a couple others just to see what it sounds like, but it's kind of a pain to scoot other pedals out of the way, and sometimes the cables aren't long enough, and then you end up with a big tangle of cords if you repeat this often enough. Major first world problems.

So what I'm imagining is a setup where I connect the input and output of each pedal to (separate?) patch panels, and then I can do the signal chain on the fly in a single place. And I could even fasten the pedals to a board even if I don't know a priori what order I want them in.

I'm looking at the loop-master 4-way patch:

You'd need two of these for each 4 pedals. The back jacks of the box would connect to the pedals, and then the interconnects would be patch cables between the "outputs" box and the "inputs" box.

So uh... has anyone done this? Is there a better way to solve this problem that still works with 10 or more pedals?
