Welcome to Talkbass! There are quite a few threads and articles around this site and the Interwebs if you're so inclined, and this subject comes up on Talkbass quite frequently.

There are many differing opinions on this subject, but it seems like the bottom line that it comes down to what works best for YOU. Your favorite and/or most used pedal is generally a good starting point, then add one pedal at a time and see how the sound changes when you have it before and after the first pedal. Overdrive before an envelope can sound pretty different than vice versa, for example.

There aren't any set rules on the subject, but in general it's better to have "tracking" effects like octave and envelope earlier in the chain so they can get the best and cleanest signal from your bass as possible. Overdrive, distortion and fuzz usually come next and then modulation effects like chorus, pitch shifting, delay, etc. are generally good at the end of the chain so they can effect everything else.

That's pretty much what I stick to with my effects chain, and it works really well for me. Your mileage will vary of course. ;)

I use lotsa delay, and tend to have one early in the chain and one at the end, just before a reverb. Octave/Harmonizing usually first (just like fivestringgecko says), and OD/distortion/fuzz is next. Everything else after that.
