Pedalboard suggestions? (help me spend my money!)

I've recently decided to add a couple more pedals to the group, so as I have no idea what I really want, I've come to ask your opinions.

Currently, I have:
Dunlop 105q bass wah
EHX Enigma:Qballs envelope filter
Fulltone OCD distortion pedal

I'm in the market for two (or three) new pedals, but of reasonable price, along with an 18V powersupply for the OCD. I'm thinking like 2 pedals of ~$250 each, or one a bit more expensive if the other's cheaper, etc.
My interest has been perked by the Iron Ether Xerograph, and the Oxide, but they may be too similar to what I already have.

Any suggestions for what I might need/want?

Well, if you go for a Iron Ether Xerograph you will basically make your envelope filter obsolete. And if you get a expression pedal for it too, there may not be a point in keeping the wah-pedal.

I would definitely go with a fuzz. From what I understand the oxide is a very versatile fuzz, but personally the bluebeard that Von Felgenhaur suggested is much more up my alley.

If you want want to expand your sonic palette I would go for something different.. but if your not particulary fond of your EHX and your dunlop, and you want Iron Ether tone; get the Xerograph.

+1 on both accounts for the Blue Beard Fuzz.

If you can't find one, or if it's too pricey, build a GGG tuned Muff from general guitar gadgets. It'll get you pretty close.

thanks for all the suggestions thus far guys! I play mostly everything, so I like being able to have any sort of sound.

As far as making the enigma and dunlop obsolete, I guess I'd be alright with that if it's worth it. I can always sell those and get different pedals instead.

What's all this about the Blue Beard Fuzz? Is it really that amazing? I hadn't heard of it until now, so I don't get it. Besides, i thought the Oxide was the undisputed king of fuzz?

I'm gonna have to say that I'm probably too impatient to wait for that, lol.
My biggest problem is that the more 'research' that I do trying to figure out what I want, the more confused I get. I wish I could just try out all the pedals in the world!

Do you have a specific tone in mind, like an example from a band? That could help. The website bassfuzz.com is really cool. He has a bunch of demos on his site so you don't have to try all. The tone I hear in my head I found while listening to his review of the Bluebeard. Plus you've waited how many years to get into effects? What's a couple months. Plus I hear some special things maybe happening with the new pedals....

Honestly there's alot of stuff that I want. I love the good ol' fuzzed out juciness that you can only get with a good fuzz pedal. I also really want a pedal that could give me a deep, dubby, reggae sound. Because of that I was thinking of going with the two mentioned up in the top post.

I guess a compressor could always come in handy, but I have absolutely NO idea where to start with those. And I'd love a tone-shaper like the VT, but how much do i really need it?

.... god pedals are the most confusing thing ever.


On an easier note, is there a particular 18V power supply that I should buy, or is any old unit good?

Have you ever tried an octave(down) pedal? Might sound good for a deep, dubby sound Sounds like you like fuzz. The Oxide sure is a nice fuzz... There are a lot of fuzz pedals to choose from out there. Have you checked out companies like Small Sound Big Sound, Fuzzrocious, Mcspunckle, or Fuzzhugger? Lots cool toys out there right now.

The Blue Beard is a vintage big muff clone (I forget if it was from a triangle or ram head). Basically EHX quality control was not all that back in the day, partially due to wider component tolerances/spec drift. Consequently vintage units tend to differ pretty greatly. Sonny or a friend tried one of these at a studio, found it to be the best they'd ever played and borrowed it. He took a multimeter and figured out the true specs of the components and was able to get those specs with modern high quality components.

I would suggest getting a fuzz and either a delay or pitch pedal. About 3:20 is a great example of whammy pedal + envelope filter. It's why I got a Digitech Whammy IV a few years ago (have since upgraded to an Eventide Pitchfactor).

I use an EHX Micro POG with the octave down dialed in + my GGG Tuned muff. Massive amounts of thunderous sound results.

I also use my POG with the octave up dialed in + my Line 6 Echo Park in "Swell" mode to make it sound like I'm doing volume swells on a guitar. Throw in a little dirt to make it even more convincing.

If I were you, I would get all three: a fuzz, a delay, and a pitch. Maybe even a volume pedal too (for swells)
