I am very grateful that I learned a lot on subject of bass effects here on this forum. Adding synth effects allowed my covers band to expand repertoire a lot, into more modern territory, thus directly raising value of a band as whole.
Could I play without effects? Sure, I have everything I need at mixer board, and for some songs that is enough.
But for a significant, important and pretty popular part of my repertoire, it's a must.
