?? Pedals For Church Musicians ??

Hey All.

I play bass with a few different bands, but mostly at church, with Christian bands or in the studio.

The only pedals I have right now is a Fender Chromatic Tuner and the EBS Compression Pedal. What else would you recommend to help compile a bigger, but definitely necessary collection? I don't want a bunch of things that don't correlate to what I do.

Any suggestions?

if you don't feel the need for any more effects, don't get them.
if you feel the need for something specific, please share so we can make recommendations.

if you don't know what you want, don't get anything. it'll always be cheaper and less stressful than getting anything and hoping it's what you want.

Ummm....let the music you're playing dictate the needs? You have a tuner and a decent compression pedal, which is a good start. The only other pedal which I would say would be useful without knowing what music you're playing would be a volume pedal.

I sometimes use a slight chorus to warm things up on slower songs and sometimes I use a defretter to give it a fretless tone, even though it's nowhere near as nice as the real thing. I used to have a fretless but GAS took over and I sold it.

I also use a BBE sonic maximizer in my rack to make my tone a little clearer and tighter. Of course I rely on my rig since I don't go through the system.

nothing is necessary if you don't have a specific need. what are you trying to accomplish, are you looking for a specific "sound" or "tone", i can't seem to come up with anything that directly correlates to the "Christian praise and worship band" bass sound. be more precise in what you are seeking or trying to emulate and you'll find your replies much more helpful. maybe a chorus ??

+1, there are songs I use a Bass synth with my Praise and Worship band. However, if it is a Mass or Service, the most I'll bring is def. a Delay(a light delay sounds really nice IME) and/or Sansamp BDDI for the DI as well as tone shapping for those pesky no amp monitor systems.

I was using a Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde for various OD/distortion at church. I just replaced that with a EH LPB-1. I don't get the outright fuzz of the OD anymore, but the LPB-1 serves me better overall when I need a little extra "oomph" at the beginning of a song.

As most have said, it really depends on the application that you are looking for. Personally, I play in two praise groups. One of them is more of a concert/festival style, while the other is for my home church on Sundays. At church, I use maybe my compressor or delay/chorus/flange. Most of the time, the only "effect" I use is my tone knob though. With the other group, it's anything goes. I really like being in this group because they let me cut loose and use whatever I want to as long as it keeps the low end. (mostly to not confuse the audience where the bass presence went to)
Let us know what specific sounds you are looking for. :)

For a small board, 5-7 pedals big, i'd say the necessary stuff i would take to a service are :

Dirt (Drive/Distortion/Fuzz - probably in that order)
Chorus
Reverb/Delay
Tuner
Compressor

Other stuff which could be used:

More dirt
Octaver
Envelope Filter(s)
Flanger/Phaser

Here's my church (the only place i play) board. It's not completed, but gives you a good idea of what works for me so far. i would consider this board "complete" with a compressor, tuner, and chorus on that board, but i'm planning BIG.

Of course, its a big board, and i rarely use it when the good electric guitarists are rostered.
