If I started over, I'd get a POD XT Live or Boss GT-6B. But I just use my regular pedalboard for now-
volume, tuner, compressor, OD, phaser, chorus, delay...

There are no effects that are "definitely necessary". Not for secular music, not for church music (whatever that is)- what's played in churches varies tremendously and it's a more pointless and vague a description than "rock". My church's music comes from Kirk Franklin, Israel, Fred Hammond, etc. My brother's church's music is traditional Methodist hymnals. My sister-in-law's church still has an occasional "folk mass".
Anyway, get effects that the music you're playing calls for. I'm no anti-FX bassist like some, but I only use a few for specific sounds. YOu gotta decide if those sounds are important to your musical voice. I use an EBS Bass-IQ envelope filter, an EBS Octa-Bass octave pedal, a SansAmp BDDI (for it's alternate voicing as well as a DI), a tuner (with by-pass so I can tune silently), and very occasionaly a Boss limiter/enhancer of some sort.

As far as a service goes:
NONE!
Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Mutron, etc, etc, etc... all have their place in music (well, at least some would say...) but the audience at church is likely not going to understand/appreciate what you would do with pedals.
For bands:
Go for what interests you, or take a chance and try something on a lark. There are no "essential pedals." Luckily, the only real essential, is a good tone straight out of the amp. All other stuff is icing on top of that cake.
That's too bad... My church loves the creative arts and we involve all types of media. I use effects as effects/coloring, IMHO they should be... Selling CE-20 by BOSS and a Board and Voodoo Power Plus2 and a Pedal tuner by Dean Markley... And how can I forget the CARL MARTIN Compressor Limiter.... Read review by BONGOMANIA: Link Removed
Any multieffects processor would work out great. I use a POD X3 in my worship band and its great. Experiment with as may sounds as you can. I often switch sounds during sections of songs for what I call "ambient atmosphere" You never know what works for you and your band.
Ambience is the right word for me.... subtle.... very subtle... So as not to disturb His prescence... A chorus is nice for that...
I don't know what other pedal you might actually need. If you want to fill out your sound a little, you could try the Behringer DR100 reverb pedal, lightly applied. Reverb does make your sound fuller if you don't get too carried away with it. Sam's club carries them for $25...so you could try it as a toy and not be out much if you don't need it (and I suspect you don't).

i've never really used more than a 5-string bass, some compression, a tuner, *maybe* an overdrive pedal (i'd gun for a zvex box of rock, that thing is awesome and has a separate boost built in) and a good amp. maybe some distortion here and there, but here's a rough idea of where i'm coming from:
charlie hall, chris tomlin, david crowder (the whole passion gang), casting crowns, israel & new breed, hillsong, sonic flood and delirious
so... save for sonic flood when i was a stage tech for them when they came down (so i know they use [among other things] distortion on bass... GK diesel dawg, that thing sounded awesome), i never really heard any effects being used on the other artists mentioned.
of course, there's always some chance for me to be wrong so fire away

Are you going to play Crazy Train to a knitting circle? If they like Ozzy, then yes! Are you going to play Puff The Magic Dragon at a Hell's Angels barbeque? If they like Peter, Paul & Mary, you are.
Do whatever works for the situation. That you're in church doesn't matter. Anything in the right context can be good, and likewise the opposite can be true. You're praying to the wrong god (or with the wrong congregation) if your pedal choice, and not the way you use them, can determine your level of faith and dedication.
Yep. Unfortunately it's been discontinued. He has said that he will be making something else to replace it, but that is yet to be seen.
Tell you what I WON'T be using again.....a Zoom 506. Tried it Sunday and it hissed like a cobra.
So now I'm in the market for a CHORUS, a BASS SYNTH, and maybe a LIMITER / COMPRESSION.
I already have a Doctor Q ENVELOPE FILTER and a Dunlop BASS CRYBABY WAH, so I'll work all that and a SansAmp BDDI into a board.
