Pedals you won't live without.

I have pedal which I would hate to loose, but I never use it playing with others. Too off the wall.

Peavey Stereo Effects Processor DEP-16. Late 1980's origin.

It has digital sounding choruses and flangers fairly typical of it's eighties era vintage. Nothing too special.

Then there is the depth/rate pot. Someone at Peavey MAY have been a Hawkwind fan. Just maybe. The depth and rate of the effect are actually inverse of each other. The Depth adjusts the range of a frequency modulation sweep and the rate the overall speed of the sweep. The result is that the effect has an auto shifting modulation, it cascades up and down AND slower and faster at the same time. Playing single notes produces a very unique pitch and speed ring-modulation delay. Vocals are fun too!

But then it also has a "Regeneration" pot which reintroduces the modulated delayed output back into the input of the effect which is at a varying angle out-of phase with what the dry input signal from the instrument. Madness! When playing consistantly with the regeneration and depth/rate at or near full CW it...

...creates wormholes...

Totally over the top effect, conventionally a useless pedal, I swear this must have been invented solely for the purpose of entertaining an audience comprised of people tripping hard on acid.

I have never seen another one, but someone else owns one. That person put up a review on Harmony Central. Look it up if interrested. I have enjoyed sharing, hope some were entertained. If you had any part in the development of this device, please contact me.

My guitarist has one. He beat me to the shop by 5 minutes.

VT Bass Deluxe - I didn't know I absolutely needed this pedal until I got it. It's an amazing preamp.
Korg Pitchblack - Definitely not something I can't live without, but it does make life easier.

Although I don't have one currently I can see a volume pedal being something that once I obtained I could never go back.

There are none that I "couldn't live without", but I have to say the combination of Durham Sex Drive and Fromel Shape gives 100% the overall tone shape that I've always wished for. If I was a freelance pro who needed to bring "my tone" no matter what situation or backline I was handed, these are the two pedals I would carry. It's sort of the same general tone concept as the BDDI or VT at a semi-clean setting, except noiseless and just "better". ;)

Bongo, your praises of the Durham Sex Drive inspired me to get one and swap out my EBS Multicomp. I am much happier with the tone of the Durham. I'm using the hard compress and the gain turned way down to keep it clean for about 95% of my playing, with the tone control at around 3:30. If I dig in on notes way up the neck, it just pops. The rest of the time is warm and lightly furred, with just the right amount of compression and none of the leveling of my dynamics that I was finding frustrating on the EBS (also, any eq boost dialed in on my EBMMs would often distort the EBS input). I love the sustain on the EBS, but I'm happier overall with the dynamics and sparkle of the Sex Drive. I did an all-day outdoor gig on Saturday, and I never turned the thing off.

It's quickly becoming a pedal I can't live without.

Paraphrasing a few others, there are no pedals I can't live without -- in fact, in the past few years I've been having such a blast gigging with no pedals whatsoever that I wonder if maybe I've crossed a threshold that I'll never step back over -- but the pedals that I feel were instrumental (no pun intended) in defining my voice, making it unique, & that I'd hate to not have access to if I needed to solidify my individuality are:

- Electro-Harmonix Talking Pedal
- Electro-Harmonix 16-second Digital Delay (original, not the reissue)
- Ibanez AF-9 auto-filter

I play and use lots of pedals but couldn't live without:

Boss GT6-B (used in a VERY specific application and always alone)

On my pedal board (not used with the GT6-B), I couldn't live without:
Marshall Guv'nor GV-2
Boss OC3 (or OC2 depending on my mood)
MXR Carbon Copy
Boss NS2

Of course, I've got 2 effects lockers of stuff I use occasionally. I should probably start selling off all the bass OD's and fuzzes I have. Somehow, I stumbled on an old Guvnor and it just works for me.
