Pedulla MVP worn truss rod nut

Dear friends,
I have an MVP 4 string bass from 1990 and the truss rod nut is totally worn.
I would like to ask - if someone knows - if I could just somehow take off only the nut from the truss rod and replace it with a custom one, or I have to take off the fingerboard to fix it.

Pedulla uses a proprietary truss rod. You can't fix it. It does not have a nut like the usual truss rod. You need to replace the entire truss rod. Not a DIY project.
 
Search for @Bruce Johnson, a forum member. He was pretty involved in a Pedulla truss rod replacement project.

I won't speak for Mr Johnson or the project, but I read through it and you had better want the bass repaired very badly and have some serious funds ready for it.

Perhaps another luthier has taken on this project. But as I read through Mr Johnson's account of the process, it's apparent that the process is very extensive and painstaking.

Having said all of that, I wish you the best of luck with the endeavor.

Ah yes, the two Pedullas.....Actually, they are just about finished, finally! As you've probably read, I went through a sequence of rough times that kept me from working in my shop for about 18 months. And that all happened right as I was about to get started on the surgery on the Pedullas.

Anyway, this spring I turned the Pedullas over to Randy Robinsen, another Luthier here in the same building as me. He got going on them, with some technical guidance from me. We routed off the fingerboards in my big green pin router.

Here's what we discovered about the truss rods:

Inara's 4-string, the earlier one, had a conventional Double-Acting Double-Rod truss rod, similar to the ones that everyone sells today. However, it was installed upside down. Normally, you install these truss rods with the rotating rod (which has the nut on it) on the bottom. In this Pedulla, it was on top, which made the operation reversed. You had to turn the nut counter clockwise to bend the neck backward. The nut is brazed to the rod and can't be removed. In Inara's bass, it got snapped off.

Mike's 5-string, a newer one, had a completely custom truss rod design. It's a single rod that's left-hand thread on one end and right-hand thread on the other. It threads into anchor blocks at both ends. Turning the rod CCW spreads the blocks apart, bending the neck back. The outward end of the rod is machined into a small square. You have to use a special wrench to turn it. This is the end that frequently gets rounded off, as it was on Mike's bass.

The good news for both of these basses is that there's plenty of room in the necks for a conventional modern aftermarket DADR truss rod. Hardly any trimming or filling needed. So, that's what Randy is doing. Both Pedullas are being fitted with standard DADR truss rods, which will rotate in the conventional direction. It turned out to be a simpler repair job than we expected.

So, to answer Stefanos question, your bass probably has the custom truss rod. You are seeing a threaded rod sticking out, which was square, but is now rounded off? Or are you seeing a steel cylinder which had a hex socket in it, but is now rounded out? Either way, it can't be fixed from the outside. The fingerboard has to come off, and the whole truss rod replaced. The good news is that you can use a commonly available aftermarket truss rod. I think Randy is using ones from LMII.

Warning: There may be two large 1/4" steel dowel pins in there, used to align the fingerboard to the body. They are directly under the first and last white dots. If you hit them with a router, things will go flying. We almost hit them when cutting the fingerboard off Mike's 5-string.

I have no idea why I have such a huge interest in the outcome of those 2 Pedulla basses. I've never owned one, probably never will, wouldn't mind owning one someday, but it's probably not in the cards. I'm just very interested in the course of this story.

My bass have the squared -not any more- threaded rod sticking out.
Now I'm sure I have to take it in a luthier to take off the fingerboard and replace the truss rod with a new one.

We actually tried to remove the fingerboards, first with the traditional heated knife, and then with a hot wire rig. It wasn't working. Too much heat had to be applied to loosen the glue, and we were worried about damaging the neck laminations. And, it was taking too much time. Far more labor than routing it off and replacing.

Unfortunately, we didn't get too many pictures while I was going through my surgery and Randy was working on these two basses. I'm going to gather up what I can as he finishes them up, and close up the documentation on the other thread.

My overall point of the other thread was to figure out a good technique for repairing Pedullas with broken truss rods. Show everyone what's involved, so other Luthiers would be willing to take on the jobs. The overall conclusion is that it's not as difficult a repair job as I had thought. Mostly just removing and replacing the fingerboard. No special hardware or internal surgery required to replace the truss rod itself.

I have a mid 90's Pedulla Rapture that I bought cheap from a pawn shop. The bass was a mess, but the price was right so I pulled the trigger. After much investigation, it was determined by my "guy" that the truss rod needed to be replaced.
He used heat, very carefully to remove the rosewood fret board, replaced the rod with something from Stew Mac and insisted that he use the same method as Pedulla, counter-clock wise to tighten.
The bass has not required any neck adjustments since initial set up and the rod works as it should.
Now my "guy" does instrument builds and repairs on the side so my price paid will likely not be reflective of the market, but I paid him $300 CAD for the work and set up. Yah, I know, I got a deal.
So OP, it can be done, you just need to shop the work around.
