The protective plastic covering is still on the pickguard of my new bass. When I first got it, I started to peel it off and wife said, "No! Leave it on!". I asked my instructor during my first lesson. He said leave it on let it come off as I use it. I (the minority) thinks it looks silly and want to peel it off.

That your wife had the reaction she did, not so unusual.

But your bass teacher? Has he been playing long?

That plastic protector is meant to be removed by the end user (that's you).
