I rarely use the buttons. Most of the Ampegs I have owned do have a mid-selector switch that I do utilize

This occurred to me. But it was much later than when I postedI never use them.
But, honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with more modern speakers at work. Way back when the SVT was created, it took two fridges loaded with speakers that (although sounding great) really didn't perform all that well volume wise.
These days, the EQ section if that head is more than plenty to get loads of beef and clarity out of a modern fridge or alternate cab.

I should have mentioned my answer above pertains to my pf800. But also used it on my SVP Pre.Ultra low, always. Ultra high, rarely if ever.
