Not sure how many have noticed this, but I find it thoroughly amusing...

When people are pointing their phones toward the band, nowadays, 90% of the time, its videos and pictures they're taking of THEMSELVES :) - either singing along, showing their friends what they're doing, or just adding to their selfie collection.

It only LOOKS LIKE they're video taping the band.

Caught The Strokes last week here in town. The couple in the seats in front of us had their phones at the ready from the first note played, they were in their 50's. I took a look at the screen and the father was face timing his teenage daughter as the band played one of their hits.
Watching that girl on their screen was the highlight of the night for me! She was obviously at home, I could see books surrounding her, but this kid was rockin out! She should have been there! Smile from here was ear to ear!
Yah, lots of folks had their phones out...

HaHa... :)...

I swear I paused before using the words I did and couldnt think of the right words for it :) . THAT'S my age showing for sure.

The least you can do is help me out here! What should I have said?

Also... I'm waiting for the wise ass that's going to say, "That's just your band Joe. People still take pix and vids of mine."

This is definitely a "thing" these days. I attended an ELO concert this summer and at the end when the band was bowing, Jeff Lynne announced they were going to take a band selfie with the audience in the background. If you look at his Instagram, it's full of these shots. I know Patty Smith does this at her concerts too.

I'm in the audience, not part of the band (that would be nice).

This is a portuguese band called The Lucky Duckies and they play 40, 50 and 60s music.

They are a pro band, but with a smaller market than rock bands, so they are very pro active. They book the rooms themselfs and pay the house a fee.

They encourage people to take photos and videos during the show, they know a lot of the audience members by their names, have a very active presence in social media, etc..

It reminds me of something Steve Swallow says about giving his music for free on the Real Book. He gets a lot of younger people to play his music and he receives royalties later, when they include it in their albums.

This is kind of the same thing. I think they have the right mindset.

This is actually a brilliant piece of marketing for bands. When you post the audience selfie pic, You ask everyone there to tag themselves, The they are more likely to follow you (if they haven’t already) and your band page, etc, increasing your reach.
