People who hang instruments with drywall anchors, not studs...

I sense some deep trauma in your past that continues to trouble you.
Once we become less shocked with each others benigne behaviour, we as a human species will live happier and in peace.
We talking those cheap blue anchors, EZ anchors, Molly bolts, toggle bolts, etc?

You mean I shouldn't be using double sided tape on the back of my guitar holders?
$2 at Home Depot. Package says up to 75lb. Only needs to support a 8-10lb bass. Seems simple enough to me.
That being said - I'll choose a stud if possible, but I doubt the anchor will fail unless you put all your weight on it.

^^^^ These. I've hung a wide variety of many things on walls for us and others using these anchors, including items much heavier than my instruments, and I've never had one fail. If I can't hit a stud for proper spacing/placement, I'll use these anchors.
No problem. That's why there are two holes -- the extra one keeps the hanger hanging. And if the whole thing goes, well, that's why you have a backup bass or two!
That is the reason to choose a three-hole hanger. Two at top, one at the bottom. It is structurally superior.
There are plenty of appropriate wall anchors for the job. And plenty of inappropriate anchors for the job.
If you know what to use, and more importantly, how to use them, no problem.
When you select the right anchor for the job, they're like dogs. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
i greatly prefer German Potato Salad to mayonnaise based Potato Salads.
I have most of my cooking supplies (pots, pans, countertop appliances, bakeware, etc.) on track shelves that are attached to the wall using a combination of stud mounts and drywall anchors. I estimate it's holding about a few hundred pounds and it's really not going to move unless I go at it with a crowbar.
A 10 lb bass hanging on two drywall anchors is going to be fine unless the drywall is bad or the anchors weren't installed correctly.
