As a self-certified bass gear nerd, I am going to give you a lot of details pertaining to the YB5-21 as well as my humble opinion. Please remember that this review is SUBJECTIVE. Try one or a few for yourself.
First and foremost:
I'm grateful we live in a time where we have all of these options.
When buying a Performance bass guitar just note that the bass was originally designed for recording. It sits exceedingly well in the mix for a variety of reasons and can shift tones well. Live, the bass is an absolute MONSTER.
Just note that this J-bass was designed to be different than other J-basses. Some may not like the tonal character of the Performance spacing or preamp because it was made with a recording focus.

1. FIT, FEEL, PLAYABILITY
By far and without hesitation, it is the best feeling jazz bass I have ever played. It is a 34' scale so E-A-D-G feels like a regular 4 string tension. I compared it to my 4 string Fender and Ken Smith BSR6P. I love these two basses. My Performance YB5-21 is silky smooth. It feels like a blend between the two basses, but leans more towards the feel of the KS-BSR6P. The playability and ergonomics of the KS-BSR6P and Fodera basses are my go to "standard".
The tension and evenness of the YB5-21 neck matches extremely well. Set up will impact this I'm sure, but it feels soooo very good. I will say this again later, but... The neck and ergonomics are excellent. I really love the feel of the bass.
The B string is not floppy and feels like it has a tiny bit less tension than the other strings. I think that is good because it is not super stiff and helps with bending the B string a bit when playing. Overall it feels balanced from B-G. It is subjective to the player. I barely noticed the difference, but enjoy it.
Once you set up the action to your specs it will feel like the neck was molded and designed for your hands. The neck is not to thick or thin, is very supportive to the hands, and allows for fast playing without fatigue. I believe a lower medium action does the job for this bass.
I prefer wider string spacing for the FUNK slap and closer string spacing for soloing. This bass has 19mm string spacing at the Bridge, which doesn't feel bad at all. I enjoy it for this bass.
My bass is about 9.5lbs so you won't break your back so much. Playing it standing feels good, but a cushion strap or wide strap will make it feel super light. Sitting or standing, no problems. No major neck dive so it is fairly balanced, but does favor the neck a bit without wearing a bass strap.
The body feels very good, but I could use just a tiny bit more contour. It's subjective.
Fit & Feel = 9.25/10.0
Playability = 9.76/10

2. PREAMP
It is far and away the most powerful (output) bass I own. THIS BASS WILL CUT THROUGH THE MIX EFFORTLESSLY. Be careful with that though. The Performance TTL-300 preamp at 18v provides plenty of headroom. It is POWERFUL and often UNBRIDLED. I'll explain more later. You have to get used to that because too much of any one of the frequencies (BMT - 3 band eq) and it seems to bury the other two. This is very subjective though. A little goes a long way.
I'll be honest... I like turning knobs to find my sound. For the most part you can play this bass flat for a great sound. Add mids to hear a bit more. For context I am more used to more low mids because of my KS-BSR6P.
- Boosting bass w/o mid presence and the in-house sub will be struggling to keep up. Also unless in a studio, you will feel the bottom for millennia, but won't hear it well live.
- The mids are FANTASTIC, but not enough IMHO. I find I have to boost it more than bass and treble. Not sure where the frequencies are set. The bass is not muddy at all, but I desire about 20-30% more clarity across the board.
- The highs/Treble depending on if you are in live or recording mode will cut through with no regard for human life. Again I need more mids in the highs to give it a sound I prefer and am more used to.
THIS IS IMPORTANT:
The Performance TTL-300 preamp goes up to 21db of sound for each frequency (BMT). Most preamps will do 12-18db of boost. If you max the preamp (everything boosted), you could do some damage to speakers, amps, etc. However, max boost sounds heavenly and will leave you wanting more. This thang ain't no joke. Be cautious when boosting. It seriously pushes.
Due to pick up spacing and the character of the preamp I find it a bit challenging to get the exact active sound I'm looking for when popping/pluckin, but not slapping/thumpin. I know what I just said. Nonetheless, this bass was made for all the thumpin, slappin, pluckin and pickin FUNK. If anything, I would consider changing the preamp to the Low End, John East, Sadowsky, Nostrand, Delano, Bartolini, Audere, a Ken Smith, or whatever you like. Just note you may not get the same output, but with the pickups it is gonna be next level.

3. BASS BUILD & PLAYABILITY
Simply put. High Quality. I'm sure luthiers can find flaws, but this is an excellent build. The neck and ergonomics are excellent. I really love the feel of the bass. There may be things that you may want to change in terms of hardware (they have options), but I am very happy with the quality of the build and materials used. My only gripe is I would like the back panel/plate to have looked a bit more "spectacular". When I compared the overall build to my Fender Victor Bailey and KS-BSR6P, I was not disappointed.

4. THE SOUND/CHARACTER/TONE
For reference I own a Fender Victor Bailey Jazz 4, Ken Smith BSR6P (and love the low mid growl), a Schechter Diamond Series Elite 5. I've owned a Ken Smith Burner 4 (which I regret letting go). I have extensively played F-Bass (love them), Roscoe's, MTD USA 535, pre-Gibson Tobias (which I still drool over), a bunch of Fenders, Peavy Cirrus USA, Lākland USA, Mayones, Ritter, Warwick (my first 4 string love), and others. I want all of these basses and more lol. I have to say that the Performance YB5-21 or YB5-24 is right there with its aggressive, smooth, FUNKY, tons of bottom end sound that is LIKE a mix of all of these combined in its own way. The tonal possibilities my YB5-21 are vast but I would not say endless.
FYI - IT IS NOT A FENDER, but can absolutely Fender things and more. It does take some time to get used to the tonal spectrum because it will give you some p-bass honk vibes (this is good), the j-bass sizzle (moreso clank), more mid presence evenly (less so at the top end and low mid to me), and just straight up good ol face melting raw bass. The B and E strings are straight thunderous!!!
The bass has PLENTY of sustain. The overall tone is great. A straight funk monsSTAR! Again, beware Do not be seduced by too much low end... because it has it in abundance.
PASSIVE - SIMPLY PUT, EXCELLENT. This bass does the job for me and then some. I LOVE the passive tone especially the clarity on this bass. If there was no preamp I would be exceedingly happy. The only thing lacking on this bass is a passive tone control knob (or low pass filter). If you get a Performance YB5, make sure it has an active/passive switch and a passive tone control. You will be happy with just this.
With my YB5-21 specs, the passive tone is CLEAR, balanced, and is great with the pickups at even. I feel like the increased clarity and evenness of tone is what I enjoy the most when the preamp is disengaged. Recording passively brings soooooo much of its own good flavor. Just muah tastiness!!!
When I play live, the bass is mostly active, but when I'm practicing it is mainly passive. Without the tone control I adjust my touch to produce the sound I am looking for. I don't mean to fangirl, but it delivers a sound that is pure, touch-sensitive to my playing dynamics, and a crisp cross-spectrum tonal clarity I enjoy. To me, that is what a passive bass should do and the YB5-21 does that.
To be redundant, seriously, just beautiful tone and it makes me more intuitive in my playing. The passive tone IMHO is just great. (Passive tone grade A+ or 97.5%. The tone control would put it at 100%) - Again, this is SUBJECTIVE, but I'm telling you this alone is worth the buy.
The Bridge pickup passive is just downright sexy. I would put it up against any j-bass. This alone cuts through or sits in the mix exceptionally well.
Neck pickup gives you the p-bass vibes, but it's the sound you would want and expect from a jazz bass. In this position or even with a bit of bridge you get a great warm and lush sound. You will also get that fat, round, and smooth "blomp".
ACTIVE - The bridge pickups placement is FANTASTIC for that burpy mid jazz push. Add a little bass boost at 2 o'clock, mid boost at 3 o'clock, Treble at noon... and it's GROWLING!!! OMG that thang will saaaaaaaang.
ACTIVE - The neck pickup will give you the keybass sub and dub vibe. When the bass boost is maxed and mids anywhere from 12 - 9 o'clock, it is like a keybass all the way. It does more than a good job of an active P-bass-ish sound. Very solid.
Overall, when dialed in this thing is a tone monster.

5. SUMMARY
I really, really, REALLY like this bass a lot. I am grateful for Yas Yakote making his version of a Jazz bass. It is great!
The passive tone is just downright amazing. Active it is a behemoth. People who sell it because they don't like the "sound" may not want to do some work to get it right for them. As with anything, you have to take some time to get to learn this bass. I am most likely going to change the preamp though (most likely a Low End, Sadowsky, or John East) because of my tonal preferences, but my YB5-21 is way too good to let go.
In car terms it's a stock Ferrari, but I believe it can go up to Formula 1 level.

6. Final Thoughts:
It's an all around amazing jazz bass with its own aggressive flavor. It is a funk master! I could see myself with 4 or 5 of these. I'm definitely going to have at least 2. [G.A.S. for sure.]
