Peter Hook, again

I just can't get that simple tone out of my head....

Help me understand how to describe the sound and how as a starting point, it might be acheived. I know he used a Rick copy and a Hiwatt 100. Is it the bass, or the amp and how might it be achieved in other ways?

"At the Time" Hook says "I had a Hondo II copy of a Rickenbacker 4001 and a Sound City 120 amp that I bought for 60 quid" He has also been quoted for using a 18 inch Sunn cab that "sounded like ****"

He also said he did go to a 400 Watt Hiwatt bass head.

What modern alternatives would help make that crude sound?

I think the most important part of the sound you hear in these clips (shadowplay and Transmission) was using a plec and tube-distortion. The clone-theory chorus was a major part of his new order sound, when a synth-bass has replaced the traditional bass-role.
