Phase 90, Small Stone, ect.

Im thinking of getting a MXR Phase 90 or a EHX Small Stone. Has anyone played with one on bass? Im kinda going for a blues, stoner rock thing

I have a Phase 90, mainly for when my band plays Stranglehold, but I use it for other things from time to time. It sounds great on bass, and it pretty much nails the Stranglehold sound. It retains low end well.

I haven't used a Small Stone myself, so I can't really give a comparison, but you won't be disappointed with the Phase 90 if you decide to go that route, IMO.

+1 I recently got a Phase 90 and am quite happy with it. Simple little pedal. When I mix it with my russian muff I get a Kids sound too. (MGMT)

Bought a Small Stone recently, after listening to a clip (see link). Also tried the MXR, which sounded good also, but still left with the SS (mainly based on instinct, I guess) and have no regrets. I use it to color parts of songs and fits real well with my playing.

i use a Small Stone (old type, not nano) and love it for dub/reggae and prog-rock sounds or for mixing with heavily gated and wooled-up ZVex Mammoth fuzz for dangerous dark mysterious fuzz careering around the band's sound. I have space to do this as no guitarist - just keys, drums, voice and bass. Haven't tried the MXR; but I imagine it will be good too, as most MXR stuff seems good quality/value for money, much like EHX.

Get the Maxon PT-999. It's a phase 90 type phaser with a better (buffered) bypass and you can use the internal trimpot to tweak the frequency for better bass emphasis - perfect for that stoner vibe

I have a 70s small stone and i love it on bass but ive heard that some sound different than others.

i had a small stone nano, it was pretty nice sounding but too subtle for my liking so i had to sell it. honestly i could'nt get the phasing heard in the mix, even would'nt be too sure if it was really on or not, all it did was bury me in the mix

Like I've said in other threads, I like the modified Phase 90 circuits more than the original one. The two that I'd suggest checking out are the Retro Sonic Phaser and the Maxon PT-999.

You might want to look at a Subdecay Baby Quasar as well... I'm liking mine so far.
