Part of my moving sale: original Phil Jones Bass Suitcase combo with matching 4B extension cab.

This is my second Suitcase+4B rig. Sold the first rig years ago, which I always regretted. Tried the newer Suitcase ("BG-400") and never bonded with it. It's smaller and lighter than the original, but it's a bit dark sounding and just doesn't have the classic PJB tone. So, I went back to the original model, which has the magic the newer one is missing.

Not gigging these days, so I don't really use this. Pretty heavy for it's size, so I'd prefer not to ship. Located near NYC.

I kind of forgot about this thread. Still have the amp/cab. On the fence about selling it or keeping it

It’s 300 watts. Plenty loud with the 4B extension cab, but always retains depth and clarity.

The amp is in Newark NJ if you want to check it out.

Bump. The rig has been getting a bit of use at my buddy’s studio space in Maplewood NJ. Still available if anyone’s interested.

Wow, can confirm I have played this rig at GP+S. Did not realize this was the same one. Can also confirm that after playing it I immediately had GAS. GLWS. Dont know if I need a rig like this in my own storage situation right now.

How would it compare to say a pair of 10’s or 12’s?

These particular PJB cabs with the original “piranha” drivers are very different than anything else on the market. The bass extends very deep, but is always tight and super controlled. No rumble, farting out, or other artifacts.

It’s hard to put this into words, but the envelope of each note is very defined: starting and stopping instantaneously, as if the drivers had zero inertia. It’s a very clear and punchy delivery. The best comparison would be if you’re in a studio listening to Genelec monitors versus high-end home audio speakers.

What you lose is absolute volume. That’s the trade-off.

So, it’s hard to compare to conventional cabs. Your typical 2x10” will be louder than a PJB 4x5” cab for sure. The pair of 4x5” cabs is comparable to a single 2x10” in power output, but more balanced and deeper in the lows than most. The closest direct comparison would be an Acme Low B2 if you have experience with those. The Acme cabs can be a little dry and the bass extension can be a bit too much, dipping into the “boomy” category. But they're pretty close.

Dude, I think you’re the first person to give a great comparison like this.
I should have been more clear in saying this full rig being compared to a 210 etc.

The full rig would be comparable in output to a 300 watt head through a single, modern 2x10" cab.

Again, the overall presentation/feel of the complete PJB rig is more full-range, clear, and controlled ... whereas your typical 2x10" rig might be more "boxy" in the midrange or boomy in the lows, depending on how it's designed.

I feel like most small bass cabs are tuned to be a bit mid-focused with slightly rolled off lows to help them seem louder. With small cabs that try to be full range (like the Acmes, which I also love), the low end can kind of get away from you. This rig is more like listening to your bass through studio monitors, but with the volume high enough to use on stage.
