Phil Jones C2 question

Having never heard or sceen any PJ gear in person I have to ask. Some years back I had a MarkBass mini mark 602 2x6 combo which is sadly discontinued. It was amazing! for home practice and even band rehearsals and small shows. I regret selling it and still miss it years later and wondering how close the PJ c2 with it's 2x5s could come to the minimark 2x6. What MB got out of that 2x6 cabinet was simply amazing. Has anyone here ever hear both? Thanks in advance.

Have not heard 602, but will provide C2 feedback.

C2 is a great cabinet for a practice amp. Good output for its size, but that tiny of a cabinet has its limitations. If you get a pair of them, you can replace a small combo amp. At one point I had 3 of them. It was a decent setup, but the compact size advantage diminishes the more of them you add.

My initial reaction at using a pair of them was that it was more output than the SWR Workingman's 12 that I had gigged some smaller bars with in college (still owned it and did an A/B two Compact 2 cabinets with a Genzler 350). Main takeaway here is that a pair of them is doable for small shows. I do not think one of them would be enough for anything but maybe a small coffee shop gig.

If you need more than the C2 can do, then you may want to look at a C4, a Cab27, or a small 2x8 setup (like the Trace Elliot Elf or Warwick Gnome).

I was big on Phil Jones stuff for several years. I had 2 Compact 8 cabinets and 3 Compact 2 cabinets. After buying a pair of Genzler Array2 10" cabinets, I have trimmed my PJB gear down to just one Compact 2 cabinet (with an Ashdown CTM15 head). PJB stuff sounded good to me, but it did not have as much high end as the Genzler. The PJB cabinets are also heavy for their size. You get compact footprint, but the weight can be rough to deal with.

I suppose the Phil Jones Double Four is a better alternative to the Markbass because it's a combo, like the 602?

I haven't heard the Minimark 602, but I've had a 801, and I've sold it to buy the PJP Double Four. I prefer the sound of the PJB.
All these stuff sound impressively good for their size.

I'm not sure about my mockup because I don't know if the handles are taken into account in the dimensions, but the PJB C2 and Double Four are much smaller in size than the Marbass Minimark 602.

I use a C2 for low volume home practice , and it's wonderful for that. But it will not fill a room or keep up with a drum kit. I do find that a BareFaced One10 will do that. The One 10 is an incredibly loud cab for its size. Not that much larger than the C2.

To be fair the One 10 is noticeably bigger, but it's the same weight and I agree it's incredibly louder.

I have a C2 and use it with my DB for jazz gigs with a drummer. It's loud enough but everybody is playing at quite sensible volumes and it would probably strain at higher volumes.

I can't really say because I haven't used a 1x8. One thing that might be helpful is that on DB I specifically wanted a cab that was bright and I'm not concerned about too much bass so if you want a bit more volume/bass then a bigger cab might be good. If I had the money I'd probably get the One10 as well

I have both Phil Jones C2 and Barefaced One10 cabs, had a Markbass 801 combo for quite a while and checked out the 602 and 802 back when they first hit. The One10 is expensive but has probably been the best investment. Size, shape, weight make it easy to carry and it goes very, very loud. It's not exactly hifi but theres a full spectrum evenness and midrange clarity the MB speakers and C2 don't do as nicely. That's being a bit cork sniffy though.

The C2 is kinda my main home cab that still gets used occasionally on small room gigs with no PA support. It can put more bass into a room than you'd think was possible and can easily keep up with a drummer using bundles. New, it costs less than half what the Barefaced does and they do come up used. I'd take a C2 over most other small cabs all day long.

The Markbass stuff is good but with the portability of class D heads and cabs like the C2 and One10 available combos don't make much sense to me anymore.
