the bass amp is coming in a few paychecks, figure i can afford some strings for now.

Any suggestions on a good practice amp? I think i'll get a decent amp (~$300) for the remainder of grad school then pay up the ass for some good gear once i get a real job.

TC Electronic BG250 or Ibanez Promethean 3110.

Thanks for the suggestion. I see that you have a promethean, do you own a BG250 as well? Any big difference between the two?

I tried out the BG250 earlier today and looked at some demos of it being played. It seems its pretty versatile and has the toneprint which seems like a nice addition for someone like myself.

I've owned both. I like tens a bit better and I have a zoom b3 if I need effects. I think they're both really good. The Promethean is even smaller and lighter and I think the fit and finish is a little sturdier and better made.

on another note...

Thinking about picking up D-addario chrome flat wound strings today.

Do you think these will suffice?

Will they make a noticeable improvement from my ernie ball strings?

(let it be know i play on an indonesian squire P bass from the 90s and play through a guitar amp, forgive me, im broke)

Should I shell out for the pyramids (it seems i will have to order online) instead? or TI's?

also, is the gauge important? light, medium, heavy?

Personally, I wouldn't shell out the cash for Pyramids to put on an entry level Squier. For some low priced flats D'Addario Chromes are hard to beat. They're brighter than most other flats, but that isn't a bad thing, IMO. They're very versatile and you can get a ton of different tones out of them by varying your right hand technique. Also, give SIT Silencers (compression wound) and Power Flats (groundwound) some consideration - both under $20.

For around $300 you can pick up a used Ampeg B100r, made in the USA, 100 watts, 1x15" - GREAT amp! This is an amp you'll not only be able to use as a practice amp, but you'll be able to use it on smaller gigs by itself of even larger gigs with PA support. IMO, it's going to be a much better amp than anything else you can get in that price range. They've got a very warm tube-y sound for a solid state amp. The B50r is the 50 watt, 1x12" version of this amp if that suits you more (and would save you some $$$).

As far as Phil's Scott LaFaro influence, here's an excerpt from an old interview where it's mentioned:

Steve Silberman:
Phil, I once heard that you were influenced by Scott LaFaro of the Bill Evans Trio. What did you dig about his approach?

Phil Lesh:
LaFaro was a very melodic player and jumped around alot between registers - I stole that partly from him.

Steve Silberman:
Cool. Also, the Bill Evans Trio had simultaneous lead lines going on... nobody just "keeping time."

Saw Phil play this bass on a couple of Phil and Friends gigs in the 2000s... each time he only used it during "space" to make feedback and noodle, I don't remember him playing it on any songs.

He had the bass on stage at the Independent show in 08, one of the first gigs with Jackie Greene, but didn't play it. It was a small club and I was able to walk right up to the stage and check the bass out from about 10 feet away. Never got that close to the bass at any 70s shows so it was a real treat to finally get a good look at it.

I got pretty close to the bass in the 70s but I didn't know enough about it to realize what it was back then. I knew it was a hollow body and that was about it.
