Double Bass Piano/guitar-less trio recordings

I’ve been really digging on recordings featuring bass, horn, and percussion, sans any harmony instrument. I enjoy the right-brain/left-brain exercise of juggling singing along with both lines in my mind simultaneously, and harmony instruments seem to inhibit that game a bit (for me and my mind at present).

I tend to get hung up on older stuff. Obviously there’s a bunch of cool -school stuff in this vein, Gerry Mulligan, etc. Sonny Rollins’ Way Out West fits the bill too.

More recently I’ve discovered John Goldsby’s The Innkeeper’s Gun and can’t get enough. I’m looking for more modern musical food in this vein. (Fly Trio, etc)

“The State of the Tenor” vols. 1 & 2: Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, Al Foster. There are also a couple Henderson trio albums from around the same time, with Rufus Reid and Charlie Haden, although I can’t remember the titles.

I’ve been digging the Walter Smith III album Twio - mostly chordless trio with Harish Rhagavan and Eric Harland, but Christian McBride and Joshua Redman make guest appearances. Great album!

Man, this is one of those “I learned everything I know from one track” takes. So much material here - a friggin’ masterclass. And then there’s that bass solo. Thank you (et all), this is a killer thread. I’m starting to dip my toe back in the water with saxophone after f’n up my teeth years ago, and all this stuff is a well-spring of inspiration.
