Pick Guard on ACB?

I recently purchased an Ovation EA40 ABG short scale. It has a pick guard on it. I don't think they ever came with a pick guard did they? Why would someone add a pick guard to a bass? Isn't a pick guard to protect the guitar from strumming?

What no replies? Not One? Come on, say something. I've wondered why electric basses have pick guards, for style? But an acoustic?
