Not too heavy, not too light, but just right.
They grip well also.

These are grey when you buy them and turn black when you play them. Actually its just the "Gator Grip" coating coming off. A bassist I was recording gave me one I'll never use anything else.

I've used a lot of different picks to see which ones are the best, and I ended up going with the green Dunlop Tortex 0.88mm ones.

Tortex are the best picks. They come with that white powder on them that gives you good grip when you're sweatin it on stage. I use the yellow .73's when I'm playing punk with really fast double picking (nofx style). That's pretty much the only time I use picks. Most of the stuff I play is finger style or slap.

Dunlop tortex orange .60mm is perfect for me.

Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm at the moment.
I've tried Tortex .88 and 1mm, but they tend to bend too much and I lose grip on them as a result.

I've been using a HUGE felt pick (looks like the tolex carpeting stuff they put on amps sometimes or use for rugs at Radio Shack) - .5 cm - that's centimeters, not millimiters!!! A friend of mine gave it to me years ago, found it in a box at my storage space. Not sure how it sounds, need to do some recording, but it's fun!

in the latest issue of Bass Guitar Magazine (that's the UK one http://www.bassguitarmagazine.com/ ) there's an article on using a pick- in which the writer suggests that a lighter pick .73 to .88 is best for alternating 16th note lines like Flea's Parallel universe line.

he says that Jason Newsted uses heavy picks , 1mm and above, which is fine for his all-downstrokes style, but too heavy for rapid alternating lines as above.
-not strictly true though- Newsted did use an alternating style for the faster Metallica songs eg. "One".

i usually play fingers... but all the times that a pick is called for... definitly the big fender mediums. the brown ones with 3 sides (not the sharp sides)

Well, when I use a pick, I use the .73 mm (yellow) Dunlop Tortex. I've yet to break one, and they allow me to play rather quickly when I need to.
